  • Depending on the spacing of the posts, running the cable in the air clipped to the posts might be fine, perhaps not needing conduit at all because the cable is armoured, it doesn't need extra mechanical protection. You could also add extra posts - but you'd need to make sure they're properly secure.

Running along that wall in some way would also be fine, but it might lead to complications when you get it repointed. Although I guess you could bang it on the wall and just undo the clips and pull the cable out the way for the work to be completed and then just screw the clips back in the same place (provided the stonework doesn't get moved around in the repointing). I'd probably opt for putting it on the wall one way or another as it'll be cheaper/more straightforward than digging 17m of trench.

  • Thanks, I hadn't realised that you didn't need to bury the cable at all if you have something solid to fix to. Just out of interest, if it's run in conduit, fixed to the posts, would normal electrical cable suffice?

(that's ethernet in the photo btw, I haven't done a hack job already!)

  • Ha, don't worry, I didn't think that was a power supply.

I guess you could run it in conduit, but you'd need the conduit to be sealed to prevent water getting in/protected from the elements. Plus installing conduit would be a faff compared to just clipping an armoured cable. What you install in the shed will dictate the cable capacity that you need.

  • This hasn’t pleased me.

  • I went down the drill set rabbit hole and went to Screwfix. I talked myself into spending a bit more and so went for the Milwaukee m18. 2 X 5amp batteries with it for £269 which is £30 cheaper than the 4amp battery set

Only used the impact driver but it's light, small and very torque

  • Milwaukee stuff is very good apparently but it gets pricey. I like the option of using the batteries on other DeWalt products should I decide to buy others. Thanks for the tip though.

  • Milwaukee stuff is very good

It is. But it's also worth pointing out that they don't do cheaper ranges in the same way that the other 3 big names do. So when comparing just make sure you're comparing apples with apples.

  • Thanks for that. I have a range of tools from various manufacturers and the thought of moving to one where batteries are interchangeable appeals to me. Milwaukee would be great except I really can’t justify the cost for my random DIY jobs.

  • Is there a generic name for this type of hinge?

It's for a folding ladder, so attaches to the sides.
I've seen it called a butterfly hinge, but that doesn't seem to return many results at screwfix/toolstation/usual suspects.

Screwfix and the like often have a fairly limited ironmongery selection IME.

Try ringing a local ironmonger - the more varied stuff I do, the more I realise that Screwfix is very handy, but only covers the bases in a fairly general way.

  • That's an interesting point that I'd never really considered. I often recommend the Erbauer gear for the exact reason that it's definitely good enough, readily available and with a good selection of tools. Buying into a pro tool battery system can be costly if you need an extra couple bits for occasional use!

  • I’d ordered 2 of the youngman already but they’re taking their time delivering so was wondering if there’s a generic name to look for locally. If they’re pretty much just used for ladders then I’ll wait a bit longer for them to arrive

  • A visual check of the catalogue is a useful way to broaden the search term.

  • Can anyone let me know if there is a cheap source of these plugs which have inbuilt transformer for Christmas lights? £15 on eBay and the lights probably were less than that. The fuse has gone but I can't open it up to replace it without damaging it

  • Hey. hope you dont mind if I ask you a few questions as I really like the look of this!

Is that a high, medium and low exceptionel drawer youre using in each unit?
What base units have you fitted them to? Custom? or just the basic Metod base cabinet?

  • Has anyone ordered lime for lime pointing online? Any recommendations?

  • No idea if they will deliver to you but Mike Wye are pretty much the leading experts in lime.

  • At the end of my project I threw away at least 5 bags of the stuff. Trie to give it away on Gumtree but no luck. Try there is my advice. Be willing to go pick it up.

  • Just wanted to say @musa that this method worked very well - thank you!

  • Anybody seen anything equivalent to these from Hafren:
    secure enclosure
that would allow a standard M8 stainless steel coach screw to become a vandal-proof fixing?
Current Hafren prices through distributors running around £4.30- 4.50 each.

  • @Señor_Bear good shout. didn't even think to look on Gumtree!
@Sam_w those guys look great but don't deliver.

Found someone who will but need to colour match it now!!

  • What are these that I've found half buried in a bed?

  • Left is one of these:

    Right is one of these:

They should be attached to the wall, not buried in a flower bed, obvs.

One or both may be switchable from inside your house somewhere.

  • Put this light up having lost tolerance for a bare ceiling rose and not wanting to pay serious money. £270, Wasn’t sure about it when it arrived and it took three hours to put it up, but I actually kind of like it, and you can see the nice bit - not the base - through the door glass.
