unless you want to hand over password management to Chrome

Chrome password manager works very well and is very secure. I highly recommend it if you only use Chrome.

I used it for ages but Chrome is a total piece of shit.

Safari is so much nicer to use (especially on a new M1 Mac). Lastpass integration is also very good so that's easier for me.

Each to their own. I can't stand Safari for exactly the same reasons.
