Also what sort of journalism playbook are business week/bloomberg journalists working from if they are being paid by the people they are writing stories on?

Advertorial? Paid feature? Lowest of the low...

Editorial departments don't usually have much to do with those, it'll be a product cooked up by the publisher/sales team to bring in extra $$$s...
