  • I haven't no, modern tyres don't seem to be a problem though it's just the older models that are tricky. Thinking about it I could get some Mudguards for it that would hide the tyres and make the bike more practical.

  • Paselas are my favourite every day tyre.
Still made in a 27” too.

  • paselas work fine on conloy rims. At least the 27x1 1/8 and 27x1" do.

  • Any of you found an alternative to the ‘rope’ rim tape that was sold for Asp rims? Needed because of their v deep profile?

  • paselas work fine on conloy rims.

    Good to know.

  • Nice looking bike, can hardly tell you haven’t hand-drawn you’re own transfers 😁

Here’s my headbadge fully dried, polished and waxed. Pretty sure I’ll have another go at it - my air canister was running out and I ended up putting the paint on a bit thick. Learn a little each time - a final spray of just thinners during cleanup also helped even this attempt out. Partly why I haven’t wanted to use anything more abrasive than polish, the letters would be brassy rather than silver by now.

  • That’s looking good.
I’m sure even when they were newly made they weren’t perfectly painted.
    What’s causing the brassy colour?

  • That's always been a beauty.

  • The flat lighting is doing it a lot of favours :)

As far as I can tell the brassy colour is the underlying colour of the badge, not sure if it has been painted, anodized or some other coating to add the silver layer.

  • Chemical reaction/staining from the red paint on Gillott?

  • Thanks for the Robergel thing.
There are plenty of examples of good bike stuff falling from favour because they're not pretty or in fashion, but on some levels better than the replacement.

  • I use some I got of ebay (from vintage bike cave I think) but I've pretty sure you can get away with normal rim tape.

  • Don’t think so, it’s the same in the rivet drilling and this is the back. I’m baffled how they did these badges in bulk - maybe a squeegee contoured to the shape of the badge? I dunno. It’s a fairly enjoyable few hours fiddling about, just so long as it ends in a decent result.

Np on the Robergel write-up. They were around in the 40s too, I’ve got an advert somewhere.

  • Here you go, the pink one mentions 1947 winners using the Sport, with the crescent moon too. #geeklordery

The Trois Etoiles changed head marking - to an "E" for Etoile obvs or an "R" I think, which I read somewhere was the same but for Retail, not sure if that's right. But anyway I've never seen any with the 3 pointed star for sale but the "E" do come up.

  • That’s cool.
So they’re fully ‘period correct’ 🤓

Sam the Wheel in Brixton is probably still building wheels, I went in his place years ago and the top floor was full of old spoke boxes on shelves and bike parts.
He was old and cantankerous then ...

  • Do you have a red chosen for the headbadge?
I’m going to need to decide one for the decal set soon (anyone got a Pantone book they can lend me for an afternoon?) - my roundel is a darker blood red (definitely less orange than some repros) but no idea what they were originally.

  • Re fully period correct spokes ... 💥 ... yes very pleasing, period correct and about as strong as you could hope for from the period. They do clean up with Autosol too.

Re red for the Gillott badge ... I have Humbrol red gloss enamel #19, just because that’s what I’ve got not any colour matching. Looks ok though. Tbh if I can just get it to look like it wasn’t done by my 6yo I’ll be happy.

  • I think generic/standard colours are the way to go.
I should probably limit myself to RAL rather than Pantone.

  • I don't like the tyres much, a little bit pedestrian for my taste.

When I saw your pics I thought: nice bike, shame about the tyres!

    Are they 27's ?

For what it's worth I seem to remember that old Michelin tyres were a bit on the loose side even when they weren't old. I have a pair of Constrictor rims (26") and recently I found that a Michelin 'zigzag' which was perfectly ok on a Dunlop rim blew straight off the Constrictor. A modern Schwalbe stays in place without difficulty.

  • This thread makes me want to get on and rebuild mine, I picked up a hand painted shabby Gillot a few years ago and had it resprayed in period colours and got the transfers to match, I have tracked down period late fifties parts to build it just not got round to it yet.
    How it was at first.

And as it is now ready to build.

  • Very nice that, Nervex Pro lugs, did you add the braze-ons for a rear rack and brake cable or were they already there.
Nice colour as well what colour out of interest and final question do you know the age?

  • Colour is Flamme red, the braze on's were all there when I got it but the guy who I got it from was a tourer so he may have added them.
We think it is a 1958 from the frame number and lug work.
    :)

It looks great with the new paint , Please post further photos when it's built up.

  • Yer I guess that date would fit the lugs. Nice saddle too in the first picture. I look forward to seeing it built up.

  • Very nice. Are you putting the badge back on? What’s your plan for the build?
