    I think there are two reasons for this... first is training load and fatigue. When you do marathon pace in training you are almost always carrying substantially more fatigue than when you toe the line in a race, plus less adrenaline.

    The other element of this is that the faster you get, the harder you are running. This might sound platitudinous but I think (in general) people focussing on slower times are more concentrated on survival and finishing, whereas as you approach sub3 and beyond you are really trying to hold a pace very close to 95% threshold pace. That is a hard pace to hold for an extended period and combined with fatigue It’s not surprising to see higher hr.
