Bosses at Barclays and Goldman Sachs both in the press today saying everyone’s going back to the office. Not us mind you, our City office lease expires in July and we’re looking for some hot desk and meeting room space to replace it.

The vast majority of our office want to continue WFH with the odd day in for meetings and catch-ups.

Yeah, there's a good percentage that do. I'm not one of them though.

There's also a liklihood of a half-return, people doing Tue, Wed, Thu from the office, that kind of thing.

I found a way round this with my 4K monitor setup. It has picture-in-picture (PiP) mode, and I've got multiple outputs from my laptop (usually I just use one).

Usually the monitor is connected by USB-C to DP for the 4K goodness but if I need to share my screen I can connect again by the other input (HDMI/VGA/etc) and then make this input a 1920x1080 resolution screen that is displayed in PiP mode in a corner of the monitor. That way I can share just that smaller screen but still have it appear all on my one big monitor and I don't have to share the whole 4K display. (Obviously you can't see the bit on your main desktop that's obscured by the PiP screen, but that's easily worked around.)

Depending on how you position things virtually it's a bit odd to have to drag something way off to the right of the screen only for the cursor to appear on the left of the PiP section, and vice versa, but you get used to it.

[EDIT] Took a photo. The PiP screen top-right is a separate screen as far as Windows is concerned, and I'm sharing the whole of that smaller screen on a Webex session, but the rest of the monitor is private to me (it just happens to be looking at the same webpage which is a bit confusing I guess, but you can see it's a different browser window as the two windows have completely different tabs - one tab on the shared screen and loads of tabs on the main part).

Think about it, has large investments in flexible office space, semiconductor IP, 5G, etc., which will all benefit from the changes wrought by the pandemic.

It's really a mixed bag, depends on your commute and personal circumstances & type of work.

The general view is fewer people will be sent in to sit there clicking all day, more people will be in the office to meet, chat, brainstorm etc. for some work "water-cooler chats" or incidental conversations are a strong source of new ideas and innovations that are hard to match without personal interaction.

wework is able to offer a hub and spoke model, so right now our HQ is in Waterloo, but my wifi is on the blink so i'm working in hoxton office for the day which is a 10 mins ride for me, so I'm not in the office but I am in an office

I've been down to 2 days a week in the office for the last 8 years. I'd be happy with just one day a week (cunningly coinciding with the day I play 5-a-side near the office).

I do miss some of the communication, but then only 1 of the 5 people I worked closely with was ever in the same office (and even then there were plenty of weeks where we didn't coincide), the others were in different continents so the office is a bit of an weird for me anyway.

(It'll be none from the end of March as I'll be between jobs.)

I had a LOVELY commute, I miss the commute. The commutes were the best part of any office job I have done. I just feel like its time theft now. I can go ride my bike for couple of hours thats not a commute. I login at 9 and log off at 5 at home.

My employer has decided to get rid of 40% of their offices in the UK so thats great news.

A lot of the people I know who live alone in one bed flats are really keen to get back to the office. Living and working in the same room and not seeing any other people is really taking its toll.

I really feel for those people. I'm feeling it here, especially this week for some reason, and I live with my girlfriend in a 2 bed flat with a dog.
