  • Is everybody in the future destined to have john.smith45453323@emailprovider.com?

Yes, if they insist on using emailprovider.com as the domain. Compared with all the other subscriptions people are happy to pay, owning mypersonaldomain.com is pretty cheap.

  • owning mypersonaldomain.com is pretty cheap

But doesn't that have the same issue? Have all the good domain names also been taken?

  • It may also be designed to prevent people from guessing their e-mail address easily.

  • Have all the good domain names also been taken?

Depends on your definition of good, but yes, if John Smith wants to be john@smith.com he's out of luck unless he has a pile of money to offer the current owner.

  • He should buy j@hnsmith.co.ck

  • Domain names cost money to keep hold of, so it's harder to take all of them and sit on them forever.

There are also a stupid number of new top level domains (eg .lfgss) and it's unlikely you'll find your name is taken on all of them.

  • .co.ck

I looked at getting a Cook Islands domain a long time ago, but it was too difficult and costly for a joke.

  • There are also a stupid number of new top level domains

That's true, but if you're not on one of the old-school ones it's easy for people to get it wrong

  • All the good usernames must be taken on here. Only the usernumbers ones left or something?

  • Mad to think there were already 68 jonnys when you joined

  • Have all the good domain names also been taken?

    I bought “allthegooddomainnamesweretaken.com”.

  • Hollow tech fixing / preload bolts:
What’s the between between the various types? For instance, why won’t the colourful anodised ones on eBay fit my 5750 cranks?

  • What’s the between between the various types?

Different thread diameters, broadly road ones are a bigger thread than MTB because the MTB axle has a thicker wall for extra strength. There are ebay sellers doing road spec ones in pretty colours, or at least there were when I got a black one for my 5700 cranks.

EDIT: I think you need M20 for 5700 cranks, but measure before ordering. If you include the thread size in search (M20, M18 or M15 depending on crank type) you'll find the right ones, they are out there in all the sizes.

  • Ah, cheers. How would that difference in thread be expressed? Is it thread count or something?

  • How would that difference in thread be expressed?

They are all 1mm pitch, the diameters vary. M20 will have a nominal overall diameter of 20mm

  • Ah, just saw your edit. Yeah I think I need 20mm, but a listing for a 20mm bolt I saw had comprehensive compatibility lists that ruled out most road cranks. Oh well - cheap enough to just order one and see.

  • AFAICT M15 is 5600/6600 only and everything else Shimano is M20. My reinforced Zee MTB cranks are still M20.

The newer road cranks come with a much deeper cap for reasons that must make sense to someone.

  • Long shot but does anyone recognise these buildings? I’m being sued over a car crash, the claimant “found” some damage on his car and has presented theses photos but I’m pretty sure they aren’t taken near Royal Mint Court

  • Try pulling GPS co-ordinates from the EXIF data, there are plenty of websites that do it e.g. this one

  • That first building is quite distinctive.
Using the 3D satellite view in Google maps, I'm struggling to find anything which comes close to a match in the vicinity of Royal Mint Court.

ETA - Also, the railings reflected in the bonnet don't have pointed tops - unlike the ones which surround RMC, which are pointed.

  • Those buildings are distinctive enough that someone ought to know them. If you don't get an answer here you could try the SkyscraperCity forums, where people will be crawling over each other to be the first to answer.

  • Could also try the bike tag thread. Those folks get around.

  • Are they claiming these photos were taken at the scene of the collision then? Just wondering how proving/disproving the location of the photographs would help your case.
