  • Are the bulbs LED?

I was sure they weren't, but in fact they are... will try to find some non-LED ones and see how I fare with those - thanks!

  • That'll almost certainly be it.

Swap out for some dimmable filament bulbs and you'll be fine.

  • Now that access to my loft is pretty easy I'm thinking it would be a good place to put my server and associated bits and bobs. Obvious issue is that I'd need a mains cable and network cable up there. The obvious is to run cables down the chimney breast to the ground floor fireplace where I can connect to existing mains and network. Chimney breast is capped so no risk of anyone lighting a fire in there. It's also end of terrace so no risk of drilling through to next door.

    Two questions I guess:

If I drill a hole in this chimney, what are the chances of being able to let a wire down and it actually appearing at the bottom. There's no fireplace on the first floor.

Is there any reason to not do this. In particular any issue with what is going to be effectively a big mains extension lead going up the chimney?

  • Doesn't the chimney breast serve multiple fireplaces? e.g. Mine is two stacks and 6 chimneys. You might need to try dropping it a few times and see what happens.

  • Lofts aren't great for servers as they tend to get very hot in the summer.

  • Up to 100mm thick, whoah...

  • I've sold mine on Ebay after I upgraded to a Morso floor standing guillotine for making picture/mirror frames.
One word of warning be really careful when you come to moving it because it is so easy to lift it by the blade and its heavy and the blades are really sharp. I only did it once (years ago) and again when I sold it even though I kept telling myself to be careful

  • I did this, but just with a phone cable not a power. I would have thought the latter breaches building regs but not sure if you care. Getting the phone line routed took a couple of attempts with a string and weight, then pulled it through with that. I think first time it got stuck in the overhang above the fireplace (can't think of the proper name).

I toyed with the same idea as you but came to the conclusion that @jellybaby said. I don't plan to use either of my fireplaces for anything other that maybe electric/bioethanol.

  • That stack serves two fireplaces (upstairs and downstairs), there's another stack serving another couple.

@jellybaby that's a good point. I was thinking that it's pretty cool up there but it is obviously winter. Not sure how hot it gets in the summer.

  • While we're on dimming.... I want the dimz!

I will need to buy a dimmer switch module and four bulbs which I'll wire up in parallel (parallel, right?). What exactly shall I buy?

I like very warm ~1800K light, and could go filament but I'd like to go LED if possible for the low energy approach.

  • What exactly shall I buy?

    Something from Lutron.

  • So what am i missing - everything is perrrrrfectly level. but I have a lean that makes the top out by a few mm compared to the bottom.

  • Level might be slightly on the piss. Do you have a big flat plat you could rest it on?

Otherwise might be the feet/wheels on the cabinet and/or their fasteners?

  • You mean the back is lower than the front?

  • I've got ours off the wall and redid the rail. I hadn't realised how much 'play' the spirit level bubble had. One needs to have the back off because one side must not be pushed in to the back enough and it's not square. Might it be that?

  • IKEA utility room day 1 complete!
Levelling everything up even with the rails and shared feet is a total cunt of a job, especially when the floor is pissed. Employed five (5) spirit levels and a laser.

  • Sounds mad but theres a real skill in doing kitchens for sure thats why a lot of joiners avoid em or just do them only.

  • Should I be buying a laser level to make this easier?

  • What IKEA unit is that?

  • Genius - I'd not thought about that but you're spot on. I didn't pay much attention to checking it was square when i did the back board bit!

Extracting cabinets from a joined worktop which i'd cut out around window/door architrave is not ideal...

    Tanks!

  • It’s 3 tall metod cabinets and 3 little ones on top.

  • Yeah I wouldn’t want to do this again and I usually enjoy building stuff.

  • This is my second ikea kitchen and i couldn't agree more. Just wish we'd value someone doing for us more than wanky appliances.

  • While we're on Ikea chat, what do we think my chances are of assembling a Pax wardrobe in its standing position? According to the instructions you need 2440 clearance to tilt in in to position, my ceiling is 2400 (haven't bought it yet). I guess I could probably temporarily bracket it to the wall to hold everything in place whilst I get it assembled?

Edit, it actually says you can do this in the instructions, it just becomes a 2 man job

  • Hands, the hands of my enemies :)
