  • Re shed and greenhouse bases I used those slot together plastic things for a small shed base. You fill them with stones to give them strength.

They're great. Would thoroughly recommend, and would only suggest something else if there was a specific reason not to use them.

  • We're going to put up privacy trellis down an adjoining wall in an alleyway on the north side of the house.

Any suggestions on what to grow?

Ideally quick. Has obviously has to be able to be grown in a large amount of shade a lot of the time. But it's also a wind tunnel.

    Cheers.

  • Russian Vine, it's not called mile a minute plant without reason...

  • I saw some similar headlines but haven't read up on it yet.

It's a concrete alley so it would be in a planter.

Ideally I'd like Clematis, Jasmin and varagated(sp?) ivy. But that would take ages.

This suggestion from that article sounds perfect if every single one of the growing requirements was reversed.

That said it might grow on the west facing bit of our terrace.

  • In which case, Clematis Montana is quick and grows big, start it from the opposite end from the Communist invader, cut the Russkie back hard and frequently and chuck it and the planter out when you have sufficient coverage from the Clematis. Passion Flower (passiflora caerulea) is also decorative and covers well.

  • Awesome. That's really helpful. Thanks.

  • I’ve got some peony’s I’ve had in my garage over winter. They’ve started to short, but when should I bring them outside again?

  • Two days later than you actually do, bringing them out absolutely guarantees an immediate frost. Probably April.

  • to early to chuck some grass seed down on a threadbare lawn ?

  • I think so - takes a few weeks for the grass to grow from seed.
The temp needs to stay above 10 degrees and you need a bit more daylight.
    Late March I think.

  • Good to know. I was about to seed mine, but will wait.

  • Lawnchat. I have a weedy/threadbare lawn. Best to:

    • feed/weed and then seed
      or
    • seed and then feed/weed?
  • Cool thanks :)

  • On the lawn chat, I currently have shit fake grass with soil underneath (it came with the house). Would just taking up the fake grass and lobbing a load of grass seed on get an anywhere near decent lawn?

  • A bit of preparation would greatly increase your chances of success.

  • only just seen this, cheers bud, much appreciated.

  • it seems like it was winter last week and now the temp is in double digits and I pruned one of my apple trees. Possibly not the best angle as the branches merge with the trees at the back but you should get the idea of what I've done

  • Rake it about and loosen it up and put down some lawn dressing before you seed.

  • Can you lob a load of low-growing (wild)flower seed (clover, selfheal, creeping thyme, etc.) down instead? Better for the bees and looks good even if the growth is uneven, unlike lawn.

  • Cheers. It's low down the priority list so just wondering what the minimum effort will achieve.

  • If you put down a fast growing mix and protect it from the birds, quite a lot.
