It does make a big difference (maybe not once size off but two sizes will), but if they are second hand why not try them and resell if they don't feel good to you?
The problem with going too long in the cranks is that you may not have the hip flexibility for a smooth pedal stroke.

Crank arm length.
Wasn't sure where to put this. I usually ride 172.5 but have seen a possible bargain come up at 177.5. Does it make any difference? FWIW I'm sort of medium-sized, 5'10" and ~31" inside leg, femur normal size as far as I know. Apologies for mixing up metric and imperial. Cheers.
-edit- This is on a geared road bike BTW so clearance not an issue.
