Argos minivelo , soon to be Tern

I'm taking delivery of a Challenge Urban 20 tomorrow. It's not the place or brand I would have looked at for a bike but a 20" mini velo with discs worked perfectly for the project, and this bike is for taking care of business.

Most parts will be replaced slowly, wheels, all the drive components, brakes, stem/bars and possibly the fork.

Haven't thought too much about hubs but I'll be limited to whatever will take a 10 speed cassette, discs and comes in 36 hole.

Whatever nice BMX rims fit into my budget, might even reuse something I already have or get 2nd hand 🤷🏽‍♂️
Something without a machined sidewall, I like the profile of the Alienation Skylark rims.
This is subject to change if I go down the solid/tannus tyre route.

Yup, that might just go on the list.
Until now I hadn't thought of it but if I go Ahead it'll probably be getting a BMX stem and bars

I might be asking too much on the hub front but if I could get something that took a 10sp cassette, discs, in 36h and it had a solid/nutted or bolt on axle, that would be perfect. Maybe some kind of geared jump bike thing.

I won't be going for any other system than cartridge bearings though.

One of those Velosolo converted Shimano jobbies would do the trick

Should be easy to space to 130mm

No doubt heavy, but nowt to go wrong - Chuck in some proper bearings ... but still limited to a freewheel.

Other option is to grind away the inner lip of the dropout to flat .. which should buy another 3-4mm

I'd see how flaring 2.5mm either side of the lock nuts would feel before removing frame material.
I'll keep hunting for now and see what other options present themself.

All gravy. Looks like there will be options. Might still sacrifice the 36h rims for the sake of a more suitable hub. I just like proper freestyle BMX rims. Some good race rims in 32h anyways.

I was toying with going 451 and using long drop calipers to cut the weight down. Would be much less RAD however

I think discs are a must for this build.
I'll keep the weight shaving for the folder.
Should do a CP for that at some point as well maybe.

Another thing on rim choice.
I've been looking at some replacement forks that have both disc and V mounts.
I may well choose a front rim with a machined sidewall so that I can have the v brake fitted as a parking brake.

This might give me the chance/excuse to steal the Sun Big Baller from my BMX and build a new front wheel for that bike as well.

So the bike is here and I'm starting to strip it. Most of the parts will be up for sale, the disc wheelset, mechanical brakes (Clarks),
Cheapy cranks (150mm) and 6 speed mech/shifter, even the threaded fork and foldy stem if someone will take them.

First parts will be ordered this afternoon. Fork and headset to start.

Can’t wait to see how it shapes up. Been jonesing for a minivelo for a while and this looks like the perfect budget Neutrino.
