I used my phone as a hotspot at home for about three years, back in 2012. I had great 4G signal and an unlimited data package with Three Mobile. Back then it just wasn't worth getting a separate broadband contract, as it wouldn't have been any faster. The only caveat is, make sure you have your phone on charge.
And for the last year, I've had a 4G wifi router through 3 which has been great. It's much easier to connect other devices eg wifi printer, and gadgets etc. I'd recommend going down the 5G wifi hub. Three mobile have a 5G wifi router with unlimited data for £30 with a 24 month contract which isn't bad at all, considering the speed.

Is the connection solid enough to watch Netflix etc?

tried this
1) Open Terminal.
2) Type “unzip” and a space, then drag/drop the zip file into the Terminal window.
3) Press Enter and the zip file will be unzipped, storing all files on your computer.and also this
Open and run "Terminal".
Change the "Directory" to the Desktop (where you initially moved the Zip file to be unzipped). In the open "Terminal" interface, type in these commands:
cd /desktop
Unzip the Zip file by typing in this command; unzip {name of the Zip file}.zip.Now Terminal will reveal some lines of code to indicate that the Zip file has been successfully unzipped. Your files can now be accessed on your desktop.
Neither of those worked, so have just downloaded unarchiver, which has done the trick (£30) for winzip felt a bit rich..

On the Three 4G wifi router I had, it was perfect for Netflix. I think the download was around 40+mb and upload around 7mb. The ping is quite high though, so not great for gaming.

For some reason Vodafone are the only ones who can offer me a 5G router, despite there being good 5G signal where I am. I spoke to Three and they could only offer me a 4G one. I don’t mind keeping a phone on charge all the time so I think I’m gonna try that option first and see how I go

I think 5G is very provider and postcode specific. I've moved recently within the SW15 postcode area. Could only get 4G previously with Three mobile, and now have 5G signal just 2.2km away.

Won’t be the same in a year when everyone’s forgotten about Bill Gates & got a 5G phone on free upgrade...

The higher the frequency the shorter the range.
Most urban 5G antennas will have a useful range under half a kilometer.
Rural antennas will have a greater range but you won't be getting blistering speeds (for example VDSL+ type home broadband speeds) through them.

Even 100m away (or worse depending on buildings as the really high 5G frequencies don't like anything in the way) and you might lose that 5G signal.

These speeds are insane!
Is the general consensus that 5g will replace the need for home broadband? -
• #17487
No because of the mentioned coverage issues

Copper > air all day.
But the need for fixed broadband has been waning for a while now. Ever-increasing section of demographic only own phone/tablet these days. Swathes of the developing world that entirely bypassed any form of fixed connectivity, etc.

I used 4G for home broadband back in 2012 for 3 years. And again last year (with a Three 4G WiFi router) because the Sky broadband couldn’t cope with Zoom meetings. The 4G router last year was by far the fastest connection I could get to the property, and to be fair, it was also the most stable, with the least problems. Sky Broadband was crap, and most others aren’t much better once the honeymoon period is over.
5G provides incredible speeds. And it’s new tech. Over time the prices will drop, coverage will increase and it doesn’t need cables. I’m sure there’s drawbacks, but for a user like me, it’s great.

The Unarchiver?
edit: never mind. I see you already got to the same solution

I have a recent version of the OS so can't delete it, but how do I prevent Safari from opening when I boot up?
-
• #17493
Depends.
- could be because you had it open last time you were logged in and you have the setting to re-open windows when you log back in
- could be because you have it set to launch on startup
Go to Users & Groups, click you and click login items. If safari is in the box, highlight it and click the minus button at the bottom.
If it's not there, it's because of the first thing.

Sweet, thanks!
I've never looked at that setting and Safari didn't auto-open before I got my drive replaced.

Also check the T&Cs of any "unlimited" connections, or event connections with large data allowances. Some may throttle after a certain amount of data has been consumed, or at certain times of the day. Getting *X*mbps in a one-off test is not the same as being able to sustain that for long periods.
Also some carriers differentiate between mobile data and hotspot data.

Im having a issue with my 2018 Macbook pro 15". I charge it and use it on a henge dock most of the time but when I have my Sandisk SSD or another hard drive plugged into the computer via one of the ports on the side of the laptop it doesn't seem to use the power it seems to use the battery power and runs it down and the when i unplug them it charges it again.
Has anyone else had this issue?
What terminal command are you using? "unzip -l" followed by the path should at least show you the contents.
