I used my phone as a hotspot at home for about three years, back in 2012. I had great 4G signal and an unlimited data package with Three Mobile. Back then it just wasn't worth getting a separate broadband contract, as it wouldn't have been any faster. The only caveat is, make sure you have your phone on charge.
And for the last year, I've had a 4G wifi router through 3 which has been great. It's much easier to connect other devices eg wifi printer, and gadgets etc. I'd recommend going down the 5G wifi hub. Three mobile have a 5G wifi router with unlimited data for £30 with a 24 month contract which isn't bad at all, considering the speed.
Is the connection solid enough to watch Netflix etc?
On the Three 4G wifi router I had, it was perfect for Netflix. I think the download was around 40+mb and upload around 7mb. The ping is quite high though, so not great for gaming.
