Advice on reducing speed limit from 30 to 20

Posted on
  • Anyone here got involved in this. I live on a 30mph max road. I'd like to have it reduced to 20. If you've tackled this or similar I'm interested to know who and how to approach it. My local councillor has basically said it is what it is! Cheers Mel πŸ˜€

  • No experience of this but when i asked the council if the Vehicle plate recognition camera they recently installed on my road will also be used as a speed camera (20 road, cars regularly clocking over 45) i got this

The Council plays very little part in deciding where speed cameras should be located in the borough. This work is the responsibility of the London Safety Camera Partnership (LSCP), a body which includes representatives from Transport for London, and the Metropolitan Police. Their current criteria for site selection are based on the number of serious or fatal personal injury accidents, whose causes are speed related. At the moment, only sites with a history of three or more fatal or serious, personal injury accidents, within a three-year period, are considered as possible camera locations.

    TLDR, the council were useless.

  • Doesn't it have to be around a school to "justify" being a 20 limit?
Significant road mods needed. Can't just make a 20 limit, you have to have table-top speed bumps on entry and exit iirc

  • Find which councillor has Cabinet responsibility for' Transport', 'Roads', or whatever description your local authority uses.
You may have to check your LA's 'Scheme of Delegations'.

Contact him/her direct with copies to your local councillor(s),
setting out why you think a 20mph limit will be of benefit to residents.

  • We've already got the bumps!

  • It’s definitely an LA thing. The whole of Hackney is 20mph.
