I can try but essentially a heavy 26.8mm steel rod that needs to be held

Maybe a strip of inner tube to wrap around the rod, and a zip tie or 5 to hold it in place, depending on how wide your zip ties are? If the rod is painted you might want to keep a needle handy to open the zip tie back up instead of trying to cut it off.
