I've not seen this one yet but I'm aware of the seatpost issue I've watched plenty of his other stuff thought they were all pretty good. He's also a far more wholesome alternative to the other one.

He also did a very good series on the Vendée Globe that opened my eyes to that sport, including a prediction of Alex Thompson’s boat failure.

He said modelled it by eye, without original parts to measure? He’s guessed the wall thickness. He’s guessed the modulus at 80-10GPa, which will be closer to 65GPa for cycle industry grade carbon. UD and woven carbon is not ‘black aluminium’. Black aluminium is 3D woven carbon (ie fibres in X, Y and Z axis), which attempts to have the same mechanical properties in all directions, unlike conventional carbon which is very anisotropic. The cycle industry is not using this. He put a 1mm clearance gap at the back. 1mm! He modelled it pretty much worst ever case scenario with the pinch bolt right at the end of the seat post. You need a longer seatpost if you need it that far out.

It’s a crap design, but in my eyes he hasn’t followed BASIC ENGINEERING either.

I don’t know the guys background but it doesn’t seem impossible that you could work on a more demanding area of engineering and shit on a lower one.
What’s a bit unknown is how much it really matters outside of this seatpost.

And it’s not so much safety that he addresses in his videos, but rather longevity and false marketing messages. We need independent voices willing to address those problems. GCN aren’t going to do it.

The problem is we have no idea how qualified he is. It all sounds very smart until someone else (like @Jonny69, who I believe made parts for bumper cars or something ) actually questions his statements.

Totally agree. Who’s watching the watchmen, etc.

The most productive place for that is the comments section where his audience get to see him being challenged and he has a chance to respond.

Hopefully he’ll see this thread and we can get the popcorn out.

I think the canyon seatpost design being reviewed by "hobbyists" on YouTube in this case is being highlighted as a poorly engineered issue rather than a well engineered solution. If it is a real problem Canyon will fix it. I do find these types of video interesting to learn why things are done a certain way and why certain ideas don't work in the real world. I like to understand the basic engineering principles behind certain designs because i find it interesting and basic principles are all i can get my head around. I've got a mountain bike frame with a seat tube that isn't round now i know how that occurs. I still like the frame and these videos point out i have wheels that are over priced for what they are but i still think they're cool. When any of these non bike industry engineers get asked why don't you just go and get a job in the bike industry then and save it single handedly they always come up with an excuse often claiming it doesn't pay enough? I'm not entirely convinced how true that is?

We can all agree on taking this sort of “content” with a pinch of salt and bears no serious consequence in real world.

Context is everything.

Trust big brands. My personal fav are canyon and trek.

I don't think that he's claiming that he has designed a solution or fully understood the design (he openly says that he doesn't trust the 20mm deflection out of his FEA), but is simply trying to highlight (a) how fucking simple this is (b) how shit a job Canyon have done to have this problem at all.

Designing for worst case ever scenario is basic practice within engineering and then boshing a x2 factor of safety on top of this. Bearing in mind that a large number of £10k bikes get sold to overweight bankers, I don't think that's bad practice.

I take anything from these type of videos with a pinch of salt as well as any marketing hype that comes either directly from the manufacturers or from the sponsored/biased review sites and just buy what i want or what's similar to what i want but on sale regardless. All the big bike and component manufacturers on the whole make excellent bikes and continue to get better with only the occasional turd slipping through the net which get flagged pretty quickly. Even Hambini still rides an S5 with Zipps both of which he's ruthlessly roasted then he says they're not all that bad and he got a good deal on them 🤷🏻‍♂️

Why is he getting compared with Hambini? Has he been harassing women online?
