  • Absolute filth... Love it...

  • Sent an email to cancel custom bass order :(

What a faff but the lack of communication just got the better of me finally. Fingers crossed he's quicker about refunding my money than he is about replying to emails.

  • I think that's the right decision. A huge chunk of the reason for going custom (bikes, guitars whatever) is the chat and dance and the experience of designing it alongside someone who knows what they're doing.

It's weird that the builder doesn't maximise that for his clients - maybe something's up with him, maybe lockdown affected or something. Hope you get your money back promptly.

  • That's a shame but on the plus side does that mean you'll have a chunk of cash to spend on a different new bass now? That's always a nice feeling!

  • That’s a fun looking board.

  • Very true! I think I'm actually going to spend it on a drum kit believe it or not (I'm eyeing up a Sonor AQ1 Stage kit and some Istanbul Agop cymbals) and I'll keep my eye open for a really nice Ibanez Roadstar bass (80s Ibanez version of a Precision) in the meantime, they tend to pop up for around €350-500 but they're supposed to be a fantastic Precision which is kind of what I was ultimately wanting anyway!

    @christianSpaceman
Yeah I feel you, he's a decent guy (we actually ascertained that we have a mutual friend and have most likely been on a night out together in Dublin when he visited years ago) but like most creatives often are he's just a bit shit at running his business and being organised... I honestly wouldn't rule out placing an order with him again in the future if it looks like he's gotten on top of the whole thing but until then I'm good.

  • It's gone a bit nuts lately. GAIN > GAIN > GAIN > MOARGAIN >MEGAGAIN then echo and trem. Weird really as i play clean low gain most of the time. I just enjoy messing about with different flavours and stacking them.

  • yup. it's a Arc Effects Klone i bought off Rickster. It's my favourite pedal evah. Sounds amazing on its own and is great stacked with fuzz.

  • drum kit

Great, then we can do drummer jokes about you. :)

  • I look forward to it :)

Fingers crossed for a speedy refund so I can order the bargain B-Stock Sonor AQ1 kit that's currently in my Thomann basket...

  • You're in N ireland aren't you? Can you still order from Thomann now with getting import charges and the like?

  • No no I'm down in the Republic thankfully so looking forward to Thomann goodness for the foreseeable but also conscious that an awful lot of bits and pieces I've previously bought online were from UK :(

Incidentally if anyone had any expensive guitar purchases from EU they wanted I do make an occasional trip to UK from time to time for work so may be able to help out!

  • Stacking gain is loadsa fun.

I’d quite like a dedicated tremolo pedal, especially a harmonic tremolo, but I didn’t like the sound of that new (digital) MXR one. The Jam one sounds amazing but is rather spendy (as are most of the other analogue ones to be fair).

  • I do kinda want that Supro harmonic trem. It sounds amazing.

I've had that (non harmonic) T-Rex Tremster for yeeeeears. It's a lovely thing. Plus is has a level knob so, y'know. MOAR GAIN. My favourite trick is to split the signal at the tuner and send the trem signal to one amp and the non-trem signal to an amp with built in trem. Having two trems going in different amps at slightly different speeds creates a magical shimmery kind of goodness. Annoyingly, the trem on my vibrolux is currently not playing ball so I can't do that trick atm.

  • I’d wondered what the signal split was about and it’s a most excellent explaination. Fast trems, fuzz on, bit of plate rev, four slaps of snare drum and...

  • Every time I see that I can’t help thinking that Kevin Shields looks like he’s bunked off school to be there.

  • Also, any fule no, this is how you A.

  • You want to see my ham-fisted default A chord... thumb is over the top (as usual) muting the sixth string because I’m too lazy/clumsy not to strum it.

  • Heh. Trying to analyse your own idiosyncratic things is the road to madness. I filmed myself doing some half-arsed mid-zoom meeting folk picking earlier and was amazed to see how weird my technique for this stuff is. One finger picking and the index finger on my fretting hand waving about like a wind sock. Odd. https://youtu.be/UEvtykHWZFA

  • ^ Nic Jones? Lovely!

Sounds great... my picking has utterly atrophied in lockdown, can hardly play a thing.

  • Sounds good to me, the digits seem to be doing all the right things...

  • They look cool, don't think I've ever seen one out in the wild though!
Can't beat a good P. I keep looking at getting another one to have rounds on but can't face the agony of budget creep on a 2nd P-bass.

  • I used an Ibanez Roadstar bass for a bit when I was 16. It was alright.

Or was it a Blazer? Anyway.

    Evidence!

  • Has anyone used the Bax 120 day return process? It seems a low risk way of trying something. Free shipping and free return (according to the website).

  • I would steer clear just because Bax are known for being a bit slow/flaky with returns and refunds and Brexit has disrupted the way these things used to be handled (Bax are in the Netherlands).

Not saying they’re not to be trusted (I’ve ordered from them a few times without issue) just that you’d be setting yourself up for a bit of a headache if you did decide to return. Better to get a UK store with good service like Andertons to price match Bax and use the normal 30 day window.
