Chip on new custom frame: what would you do?

Posted on
  • So, my new frame arrived last week, and the shop are building it up for me. It’s been sat in the box until today (it was delivered to them; I’ve not yet cast eyes on it). They rang to let me know that there’s what looks almost like a stone chip on the head tube (see pic).

I’m not the most precious about keeping bikes pristine but I’ll be honest, this has annoyed me.

What would others do in this situation?

    Cheers

  • That's a bit shoddy tbh.

But I guess stuff like that could happen in transit, although the frame should be well protected. If you're not super concerned about the frame being pristine, it could be worth speaking to them and seeing if there's some other kind of arrangement you could come to. You shouldn't really put up with getting a brand new custom frame with a chip in the paint.

  • ‘A bit shoddy’ sums it up well. I’m thinking about asking for the charge for the paint upgrade back tbh.

  • It's new, it should be perfect. You chip it later and hate yourself for it, there shouldn't already be chips in it (even though it saves you some grief).

  • I completely agree. It’s just a question of what I do about it.

  • Email the builder with that picture, ask what he/she/they plan to do about it, go from there.
Always receive delivery of stuff like this yourself, not saying they did, but lbs could have caught it, framebuilder may possibly pull the 'fine when I packed it' card.

  • like above, i think emailing them stating the defect and how it was found, like you said you're not precious about it but if it was caused by transport it's better they know so they can either improve their packing or find another courier.

in terms of what I'd expect them to do? speaking as a customer service agent adjusts glasses , realistically i think repainting is a little ott unless they're a luxury/premium builder, not just from a cost perspective but seems just like a waste materials wise and delay to yourself (if you care about these things). i think refunding the cost of shipping would be best (if you paid it) and if your paint was billed separately a reduction on that (knocking it down a "tier"/ flat reduction in cost etc).

a lot of it does depend on the market the brand operates in really if you go whole hog for "i want it repainted" if they're doing volume vs luxury/vip sales most brands wouldn't (and would be silly if they did) offer to repaint for a stone chip (as much as the customer is always right yadayada)

  • I’ve emailed them with a pic and said ‘so what do you think?’ We’ll go from there.

  • Doesn’t look like transit damage. It’s proximity to what appears to be the head badge seems more than coincidental.
