  • had an old V70 before the Golf.

Yeah I would love any old Volvo estate really. Our other family car is a modern Volvo, an independent Volvo specialist looks after it in Glasgow. Every time I'm there I always see some really nice old Volvos in for service. Theres a really souped up 850 estate I see around Glasgow all the time, its so obnoxiously loud that I often know its that particular car before I've even seen it.

Probably not the advice you want to hear but unless you really need the cash right now I'd keep the Golf!

  • I’m very thankful that cash flow isn’t an issue for us at the moment, so I’m not desperate to sell at all.

I’m really conscious that, the less it gets driven, the more chance of there being issues when I do. That and I want more space in the garage for bikes!

  • Aye, it will be spring in no time at all. A weekly evening cruise when the longer evenings come would keep it sweet.
But of course having 3.5k in your pocket and more space for bikes wouldn't hurt!

  • mine 15y ago, so much fun

  • Audi 80 gte owner here . B2 version with the 8v 1.8 from the first gti. Loved it but was offered a 306gti6 cheap and I had to give the Audi away for nothing to a mate :( in black and cannot find a photo - I loved that car and think about it all the time . Did not like the 306 much.

  • If we're having a mk2 love in... this is my 16v Atlas Grey I've had since 2009. It drives but is in storage with some electrical issues with the indicators I never managed to get sorted for an MOT a few years ago. Grand plans for a full resurrection at some point, need to start hoarding some parts.

  • No pictures of me and my Mk2 survive. I didn’t take photos because I had a Nokia banana phone. I was too busy sending text messages for free to people on the same network.

  • Bloody lovely that - Atlas Grey is one of my faves on a MK2 (always been a small bumper guy myself though).

All these pics and tales are making me question how sensible this sale is!

  • If it’s not rusty or rotting and you can afford to, I’d keep it. Modern cars are rubbish

  • Very nice, if I wasn't holding out for a mates 16V I'd be more interested.

It's a difficult situation to be in. I've sold a lot of stuff in recent years to clear stress, clutter etc and I often tell myself if I really miss it then I can buy another one. But prices on a lot of things I've owned has skyrocketed lately and even though I'm better off now I can't afford the premium or face the idea of paying double what I sold it for (including my old VW).

    GLWS.

  • Modern cars are rubbish

I haven't passed 92 yet and will probably go backwards if I stay in London to get round ULEZ.

Someone I know just got a new Defender and in his words "the gear stick fell off" driving it home from the showroom.

  • Here's my 1st Golf a Golf driver both me and my mate had great fun doing them up.

  • Had to join in the mk2 love. I’ve had a few and would love another but don’t have the space at the moment. A couple of shots of my previous cars and a couple of my old Jetta just because. GLWS!

  • Voodoo Motorsport I remember them 2 boys from audi. They had a workshop in kingston .You had some nice cars

  • I've had a couple in the past. Most notably a very low, poverty spec 1.3 with BBS RMs (same spec as Dry's 1st^) and now a fully restored 8v Gti.

It's great to see so much appreciation on here.

  • Used to have one - the weber conversion on mine was about £600 in 1999 - transformed the running and better MPG. The engineering in these cars is pretty bulletproof and they're part of a generation of German auto quality that's sadly no longer there (but VW are quick to talk it up).

    GLWS!

  • Agreed, I just drove it down to work and back to drop off a project order to give it a good run - started first time (with a bit of choke for good measure) even though it hasn’t been driven for a fortnight at least.

My Weber cost £350ish to buy and then I had the garage fit it, which was another two or three hundred so probably works out about the same! The original Pierberg was not a great bit of kit in my experience.

  • I had a Weber added by my dad into my first car a Vauxhall Astra , it had a bit of poke..

  • Still have the old girl, one final call here before moving to Autotrader/eBay etc.
