  • That might be the sticking point. Not sure if the Tado extension kit/controller would wirelessly speak to the Nest. If it was wired, I'd be 80% sure it would work as it would just be sending a simple signal. But yes, check the forum. There may be other wireless TRVs compatible with your heatlink though.

  • Ta. Not set on the whole thing. Was just seeing a lot of love for tado on here.
Will do some more research and see what could work.
    Thanks!

  • Love a pin torx. My latest project goes heavy on pin torx M6 bolts in A2 stainless.

  • @jellybaby
Perhaps the 3 of us should have a pin torx appreciation thread?

Why? The only reason to use pin torx is anti-vandal applications. Such as external CCTV or external lighting.

If you really want to piss people off use that weird triangular screw that Thorn lighting used.

  • And many other electronics manufacturers.
    That pissed me off.

Decent quality vandals have a set of security bits.

Are they stealing 2 gang faceplates from inside buildings now

  • To follow up on the heating chat. If I have a combi boiler with no room stat. What’s the best way to have decent control over heating. Three floors, all used. We don’t need particularly smart stuff, but not heating a whole house unnecessarily would be nice.

Weirdly, going back to torx tips, they will fit the triangle screw heads if you have the right size.

  • Smart TMV's on the rads or a dumb zone heating system.

  • The screws are marketed to institutions like hospitals and prisons so apparently only poor quality vandals there.

  • Great, got a link to an idiot’s guide?

  • So what is your choice of anti vandal screw?

  • Do you have a timer?

If so then set the timer for the hours you want the place heated, then fit dumb TRVs to the rads to control the temperature in each room.

Smart TRVs will give you extra control (i.e. turn off heating in a specific room at a specific time) but are expensive.

  • It’s a place we are moving into. There is a programmable time clock on the (Baxi) boiler. Current place is a flat with a portable wireless thermostat, now my partner is working from home the room stat is the controller for the heating in the office and the trvs in the other rooms are set accordingly.
In a 3 story Victorian property I think we need a system that is at least thought out. Home office in the top floor, kitchen and main living space on the ground floor.

Luckily the turbo will be in the basement with no heating.

  • If you are buying the place, the boiler will die in about two years time as is the fashion then you'll have the opportunity to get it re-done properly :)

You could upgrade the existing controller with something like Tado or Nest.

But unless you want highly specific control of certain rooms at certain times, i.e. because you aren't using them or they are a child's bedroom and you want the radiator to be able to call for heat a timer and dumb TRVs is adequate. Or get a mix of dumb and smart TRVs and put the smart TRVs in the rooms you use the least so they can shut the heat down completely when they are empty.

  • OK, you can zone which is the most expensive really as it involves 3 way valves and stats on each floor.

Smart Stats will report to the hub and you can set up the heating via the app.

To be honest, the easy and cheap way is just standard TRV's on each rad and set them each to maintain room temperature.

  • water getting between them

Well I’ve never removed them to have a look underneath of course but according to the manufacturer general cleaning/spilling water isn’t a problem.

  • Lol, that’s what I have had all my life. I took it for granted to the point that I didn’t even check if the rads have trvs. Too late now, we are buying the place.

I guess I wanted to know if it’s better to pay xxx for a standard wireless roomstat to make sure the heating is not on all night or if a ‘smart’ system is worth it for a little more investment.

One thing to add, I would love a system with a ‘boost’ button. It’s always about being cold now (opened window when cooking, sitting ages so got cold). Currently it’s on or timer. If you are cold you switch to on, then at 2am you wake and remember you didn’t switch back to timer.

  • I run hot and i’m also from the ‘put a jumper on’ school of heating. But with my partner working from home, I realise that having the heating on from 7-8 and 5:30-10 is not a practical solution.

  • I have a netatmo smart thermostat (mainly because it was cheap and really easy to fit in a variety of different setups).

One of the useful features is you can set the boost time so if you turn the heating up it reverts to the standard schedule after a couple of hours (or whatever time period you set up).

  • Some sort of 1 way screw. They can still be removed but it is slow and/or noisy.

You would probably damage the plate doing during maintenance but those tend not to be that expensive.

I'm not aware of anyone making M3.5 machine screws with a one way head though.

  • Get a tado or nest stat to control the boiler: geo fencing to tell when you're home or away, set the timing on your phone, boost etc. If you feel like you need it later get some smart TRVs when they're on sale.
