  • It's a move that I have tried a few times and it's usually been fairly neutral.

When you went for my castle I thought I'd cocked up, but realised you had given me a chance to take your bishop while opening up a chance on your castle at the same time.

I also mucked around at the end trying to workout how to get a mate.

Good game. I'm not sure you will make mistakes like that a second time....

  • Not having offered that draw doesnt necessarily result in a win of course

    3 worse things about chess

    Queen exchange
    Being forked
    Being forked 3 ways

  • Brutal it is.

And we all make stupid errors. Don't think about them too much and save the grey matter for the games you are still playing.

  • Not having offered that draw doesnt necessarily result in a win of course

Of course! Probably would have lost.

  • IMO the worst thing in chess is not having any good moves, not having the prospect of any good moves and your position slowly getting worse and worse until you lose.

AKA every game against someone much better than you

  • zugzwang is worse - where you are in a place where you have to move but can only put yourself in a weaker position for doing so.

the thing I find the worst. and this is about online rather than in real life. is working through what you are going to do in your next move, based on what you think they will do, realising some peril you are flirting with as part of that move. then by the time you come back to the board completely forget about that peril. and fucking up your original move in the process.

  • anyway. as waiting on the next rounds of both of the current forum tourneys am up for any pick-up games. 1 or 2 day a move is the sweet spot.

hit me up if you fancy a game

  • the worst

Working out a sweet move combo then immediately playing move 2 of it instead of the necessary first move.

Pocket moving after forgetting to lock phone screen from browsing games.

  • ouch yeah they are good ones. good as in the worst.

and finding it hard to make the move because you have spilt Tequila on your phone screen.

    spilling the Tequila

  • Realising i'm missing a trick by not using Tequila as a Chess P.E.D.

  • Good game @doubleodavey glad I scraped over the line. Saw your message but couldn't reply via the app

  • it enhances everything dude

  • I really enjoyed the 1st half, 2nd half a bit less! GG

  • Sorry - im swamped with work and finding it just a stress so have withdrawn (I was making a mess of things and v unlikely to get back from where i was @CordonGole !)

Realised when playing mashton previously that I cant play on a phone screen - needs to be a large screen or even better laid out on a board. But both of these require time!

  • Spending a while thinking about your move. Making your move. Then almost instantly seeing the move you should have made.

  • who progresses if it is a win each in the head to head?

  • Weirdly it is both. I guess there is no better way to do it.

  • then by the time you come back to the board completely forget about that peril

The notes feature is useful for this.

  • notes feature would seem like cheating to me. quite like analysing a game after it is over but in play I treat the game as if I am sat opposite you. if I have not seen a board for a while I will go back a couple of moves mind just to refresh.

  • Nah, you're allowed to take notes in real games right? I saw it on the queens gambit!

The analysis board is plain cheating though. Of course I use it loads. But it is cheating.

  • It's not cheating in daily games like we are playing. It's cheating in time limited games.

Daily games are like correspondence games. You get on with other things between moves.

Cheating would be using computer engine analysis or asking someone for help.

  • I discovered the analysis thing recently and do wonder if I'll be able to play a face to face game properly now. It's like using a calculator vs working something out in your head.

Really useful and you still need to know what you want to achieve, but definitely removes some of the brain exercise.

  • yeah, it makes it a different game. If you still play a few "live" games thought it keeps you on the straight and narrow and then i think it overall improves your chess

  • yeah I don't really think any of that is cheating. i just mean it feels like cheating to me.

i have only played real games down the pub and there has been no note taking or anything like that.

  • I miss the pub.
But chess was rarely a pub game, we always would go for something that required less concentration. But now Im thinking it would be an ideal place to play....
