Chris, I love you.
Great success! Used my old iMac to install a fresh High Sierra install on a USB. Booted from that on my MacBook and we’re away.
I’d literally been tearing my hair out for days trawling the deepest darkest parts of the web. On the plus side I’m now proficient in diskutil via terminal and also navigation.
Everything is backing up right now...
M1 MacBook Pro 16GB lands in the morning too. Ahead of the initial delivery date. I’m not sure I want anything to do with it now tbh.... 😬

Wahoooooo! Glad it worked!
It’s madness that this can happen to folks with as much as 30gb free disk space. -
• #17404
That's great news. Time to sort out backups? 🙃

Anyone using Office on a new M1? In particular Word and Excel.
How well does it work vs a PC?
Cheers.

Use excel, ppt, outlook and teams - makes up about 95% of my workflow.
All flawless.
Very snappy vs PC; especially loading large ppt files. Regularly deals with 300mb+ ppts with no load delay.

Cheers.
Tentatively looking at laptops and the M1's actually seem very price competitive.
Not wedded to any OS, they all work. But am tied to Office.

I wouldn't hesitate.
I've got the pro but I think the Air would be more than you'd need. Same processor...

That's what I thought. The lack of fan and touch bar appeals too. Lack of ports less so.
The only thing is once you add 16GB RAM to seem to be tied to the RRP and it gets a bit more than I was originally thinking.

I’ve only got the standard configuration (no additional ram) and you really don’t need any more.

Regularly deals with 300mb+ ppts with no load delay.
The next level of the Government's Track and Trace system when they realised that Excel had its limitations?

Creative decks to clients with full bleed high res images and video concepts.

I now have 3 backups ahead of the planned wipe and fresh install.
Can never be too backed up...
-
• #17414
don’t need any more.
Yes I definitely don't now. My concern is whether I need it in a few years as I tend to keep my laptops for a long time.

Purchased.
Thanks for the recommendation. -

Ace. Enjoy it!

To be honest I’m hoping I don’t get much use out of it, otherwise a load of my electrical items will be fucked and I’ll be trying desperately to fix them on the cheap..
Though I do have to replace a battery which isn’t holding a charge in a Bluetooth speaker so will come in handy for that.. -

My 2010 MacBook Pro needs a new drive. Had an SSD put in a couple of years ago and it is now failing.
The shop says I have 3 options for repairs.
1 - replace drive
2 - in addition, OS install
3 - in addition, data recovery
I have a recent complete backup available, would I need 2 or 3? -
• #17420
What kind of backup do you have? Time Machine?
If so, the new (blank) drive needs a (mac)OS on it to receive your TM backup. -
• #17421
If you have a back up and the SSD is fucked, just replace it yourself. Its a canter then just back it up off the complete back up you have and save yourself some money.
Old macs are so easy to change drives.

Using Time Machine onto a WD MyBook.
-
• #17423
So to be clear, my complete backup contains the OS too, not only data?
-
• #17424
Time Machine doesn't back up the OS, but you can reinstall the OS yourself on to a blank drive using Internet Recovery, if they're going to charge you to do it.

Okay, just googled that and I think I’ve actually done it in the past... Thanks.
Bit late to reply to this but another vote for the M1 - recently got one for work (which includes a good deal of video editing and AE) and it runs really really well.
Coming from an HP Z840 which is meant to be a beast I actually find myself enjoying working on this far more, though the export times are a bit slower the whole timeline work and playback feels much smoother, which is saying a lot, especially since Premiere and AE aren't actually full M1 yet.
An external display is obviously needed though as screen space would be infuriatingly small for editing on its own.
