Let me just ban you now. It's gone far enough.

no worries.
I'm generally erring on the side of caution with these sorts of interactions, don't want to spend too much time engaging with posts like that, and get dragged down the racism rabbit hole, whilst also being open enough to give those genuinely looking for answers the benefit of the doubt if their understanding of the current situation isn't perfect. -

As the song went “abuse the bugle-boy in company B”
I think it was the guardsman named Stokes. -

First of all, you’re welcome. Trolls should remember their place. Why? Because you show your ass with comments like this,
this countries new found apparent systemic racism <
If you were really interested in the topic, you would engage with the 107 pages of discussion and resources people have shared. You could even engage with your supposedly rainbow nation cycling club in the midlands and see what their life experience is. Not just in your cycling club mind, but in their lived experiences of being non-white in this country. Then tell me if they’re only out here to increase the divide.
Edit
Several hours too late with the this but glad the troll has gone. -

The amount of times I've been accused of having someone else's bike on me is ridiculous. Didn't matter how shit or nice the bike was either

Am guilty of thinking questioning people.
It even happened at East beers.
-
• #1187
Yeah to be fair, I see/hear a lot of people describe what they perceive as hood rats/yutes/rudeboys (or whatever stupid name) being suspect because they're riding a half decent bike. I don't think race is always involved in that, but definitely a judgement on appearance and what sort of bike people expect others to be riding.
-
• #1188
I've also been described as appearing to people like some of those descriptions ⬆️
Which in itself is annoying but also is probably the reason I got accused of nicking people's bikes all the time. -

Thanks for sharing that video link, great work from Amber Ruffin, very informative. Funny but true..

Would like to say that I am the same with white people. But if the person is in smartish clothes would I not give second glance.
Doesn't paint me in a great light.

I've given to not making it my business really what other people's appearance means when I see them cycling. I mean, sometimes I ride my clipless pedals with flat shoes if I've either left the shoes somewhere stupid or I don't want to skate around the shop. Probably looks suss.

I'm not judging you nor commenting, I'm judging me by my reaction.

It does seem to be a wide spread issue:
Advisers from the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) have raised fresh concerns over Covid vaccine uptake among black, Asian and minority ethnic communities (BAME) as research showed up to 72% of black people said they were unlikely to have the jab.

No I totally get what you were saying. Didn't take it as a judgement at all. More just saying people can appear dodgy when they aren't sometimes.

Not exactly the correct subject matter for this thread, but hoping to get some hits/crossover.
I found out about this vaccine study needing volunteers 6 days ago, and responded (The study is for people aged 50+). Got my first injection today. They aren't hanging about.
I think UCLH are still recruiting, and they are especially interested in BAME applicants.

Last night my wife was filling out an application. A colleague had suggested her for the role. It’s for additional work as a mentor for POC looking to progress their career in this specific field.
There was a section about the barriers that she perceived in progressing her own career.
She wrote about her own culture and community’s low expectations for women with regards to getting good job and having to overcome them while at the same time strive to achieve in what is sometimes a very alien world to her.
I asked about class and was that a factor that could compound the racial boundaries? Virtually all of her colleagues are privately educated, lovely people in most cases but a cast iron In-Group. My wife was genuinely scared of including that observation. Subconscious racism is deniable especially to one’s self, but the advantages of a “good school” are not so subtle.
So she included a section about unconscious-bias within that group as well.
Not sure how well it would go down but hey, gotta speak truth to power -

^When I turned up at school with a new bike I was asked by a parent 'did the school get it for you?' I was a bit confused by told them no I bought it from a shop. Went home and mentioned it to my partner and she was well pissed off. She said I bet they didn't ask the other white parent with the brompton if he needed help to afford his bike. ^
^Hope your partner gets the mentor position, would be surprised if they have that conversation with her. Every time I've brought up racial bias within the workplace even in an 'official' capacity my company has just ignored it.^
@Sifta do you know if they will open up recruiting again in areas that are currently closed to new applications?

No worries thanks for posting it, I found an email on the site and I'll send them a message. Hope you feel alright.
