but you never use those gears apart from 5s of brain failure before you realize how much you're crossing.

Small-small maybe, but it's nice to be able to utilize big-big.

And I'm not sure I agree with the statement that it works if you can't use all gears. But that's another discussion I guess.

You know, I saw this nice polished 42/26 double. Together with an 11-28 cassette that would make an awesome drivetrain.
