even road derailleur can just about cope with 11-40 on a 50/34

In every of the 22 gears? Including big-big and small-small?

My RD7000-GS did, even the 5800 did when paired with the roadlink, but you never use those gears apart from 5s of brain failure before you realize how much you're crossing.

The nice thing of the GRX RD is the clutch, not the gear range

Small-small maybe, but it's nice to be able to utilize big-big.

And I'm not sure I agree with the statement that it works if you can't use all gears. But that's another discussion I guess.
