Good shout on this thanks, I wear a cheap balaclava type thing from Aldi thats really warm but only really wearable on the coldest days and none of my skull caps are remotely waterproof.
Think I'll take a punt on it -

I'm using Endura Pro Sl winter cap here in Finland and it works great from the cold rain to ~ -8celsius without anything under it. I'm using the bigger size and it's a bit snug for my 58cm head.

I bought one of these last year, so dorky but so sick when the weather is horrible. I've not tried it on the bike under a helmet actually, will have to see if it fits!

I more or less live in my Icebreaker Merino kit during the winter months.
Had them for close to 10 years now and still going strong. Costly upfront but in the end good value.

Without going back through the 30 pages of this thread, could you help kit me out for some winter rides please?
I've got some dhb thermal bib tights and I've got some gore gloves cold-ish road rides... Point me in the direction of some sensibly priced kit please!
Bit sick of the turbo, just got a cross bike and I want to go outside and get muddy!
But it's cold... -

DHB / Decathlon .

Aldi for cheaps too

The galibier kit I just got is all pretty nice so far, and well-priced. Would say it might be worth getting a good top layer that will do you for most winter rides, whether dry or wet. Sportful have a good range (fiandre stuff) so can get something that suits you if you run hot or cold. You can usually get some good deals on their stuff too.

Sounds like a good shout. I've got some other Galibier kit for summer rides and I like the quality and fit.
What did you get, the jackets? Is that earlier in the thread?

Just got some gloves and bib shorts but the other stuff gets good reviews too.

Use your old kit. Don't buy new kit to trash riding cross in the winter.

Better answer.

I don’t know it fits your budget, but I really rate gore windstopper.
The Gore c3 range is very good value for money and keeps you warm. -

I’ve just bought the Shimano MW7 in 46 but need to return them because they’re too narrow for my feet + winter socks at the toe box.
Lake winter boots are meant to be wider fitting so I’ve ordered a pair of Lake MX145 also in 46 to see if those work better. They won’t be as waterproof, but I’m hoping my Endura neoprene overshoes will fit on top when needed.
There’s also the Lake MXZ303/304 which look a bit more like they’re made for winter in Vermont.

Absolutely mega bits of kit - gutted I lost mine a while back

These are nice gloves, but not really suitable for winter. More late autumn early spring.
But as you can see they have seen some use.

Thanks I've been considering Lake, have heard they are wide fitting.
Those MXZ/303 look seriously heavy duty, defo got a bit of a Terminator/leather clad biker vibe!
But if they keep my feet warm I don't care.Good to know about the MW7's being too narrow.
My old road shoes were shimano but a specific wide fit designated 47E and they were great but it seems hard to find anywhere that keeps the wide fit versions in stock!I think I'm going to have to wait until the shops are open and I can try some on in real life.

By far my best winter glove are Sportful Fiandre Gloves, https://www.wiggle.co.uk/sportful-fiandre-gloves
(Looks like they have updated them)
but they strike a good balance of dexterity and water/ wind protection and warmth as the temp drops.
If I have to go out like this evening these void lobster gloves are what I wear, hands toasty warm

I was shopping around to order one but I'm a cheapskate and thought I'd found a bargain here... https://www.ebay.co.uk/c/753163944
Buyers beware! What size did you order and hows the fit? true to size?
I've got a fairly big noggin at 59cm but unsure whether to go L or XL -
• #825
I'd say it is true to size, maybe a touch bigger if anything but don't take my word for it. Quite like the fake version, so close!
I also ordered XL. Was tempted to go for the XXL incase they were tight with liners but even with liners the XL still feels nice.
Pretty happy with mine and likely to try a few more bits from Galibier.
Next thing I'd like to try sort is agonisingly cold toes. Two pairs of socks and overshoes over fizik R1's and I might as well be riding barefoot.
Any recommendations for wide fitting winter shoes welcome. Any brands that work well for broad feet?
Had to send back the size 11 and 12 planet x ones I bought a while ago.
