So many great thrillers made around that time, on the conspiracy tip I'd throw the Parallax View into the hat.

Back in the 70s it was even a common subplot in films from other genres (comedies, heist capers etc). The Anderson Tapes, for example.

Aside from anything else, the technology that has now "got" us is computing, something Hollywood has mostly been reliably shit at making films about.
