  • Primark. But whatever the brand I find the idea of £10 jeans questionable. Who's getting paid?

  • Of course they do. They aren’t going to proudly announce they use sweat shops and forced child labour are they?

  • Ah soz, got my wires crossed.

  • No but your average sweat shop owning land polluter tends to steer clear of eco claims.

  • I have a mate who works in ethical supply chain management in the textiles industry.

You'd probably be surprised to hear that Primark rate highly in ethics and sustainability assessments. They produce very little excess stock and don't rely on inflated prices followed by a huge sale to try to shift large amounts of unsold stock. They sell almost everything they produce, so there's little waste and they lose very little money. As I understand it their supply chain is very transparent. I was definitely very surprised to hear this.

I seem to remember Uniqlo didn't fare so well and were a little more questionable. However, I don't know much about the company and didn't really pay so much attention.

It's shit like Converse sold through Nike's supply chain that you really have to watch out for. The non-Chinese produced ones come from all the global child labour and forced labour hotspots. If you infer anything from reports from the neighbouring factories, they're riddled with shitty working conditions and poor worker treatment.

  • Surprised and good to know, thanks.

  • The pair I currently need to get the crotchal region fixed on would actually be nicer as shorts - they have some engineered fraying on the knees which i've never been that keen on, could even just chop them myself & get them done properly at a later date

  • Interesting.

So do you know how Primark and Uniqlo compare on labour?

  • Thanks for this, enlightening.

  • Sorry, I don’t know.

  • I’m being lazy and should do my own homework

  • My Muxu's are shot and i want to try something new. Anyone tried Chrome Brannan's? They look like they might be a bit on bike only. Otherwise might try Swrve Cordura as i can try them on first in Condor. From memory Rapha were a bit tight/restrictive.

    Any new contenders?

  • Bit late but that's really useful info, thanks. I signed to up to ethical consumer to try and get more information on the brands i buy from. I'd never considered Primark as i'd always worried the quality was so low that something like jeans wouldn't last. I've seen a few places recycling denim so maybe they're worth considering.

  • I noticed 'sportpursuit' have Vulpine jeans on sale.
Does anyone know how slim their 'slimfit' really is?

  • Epic dredge, but did you end up trying the Brannan? I'm looking for trousers that are bike-friendly (not lycra-heavy jeans) and there's little choice nowadays.

  • Nope, wasn't sold on looks and went for Spoke jeans instead. Quality is good but i wished i'd gone for the largest thigh size as there is a hint of a jegging fit but nowhere near as bad as my old SWRVE's.

  • Thanks. I would have gone for Swrve but there's no new stock anymore.

Might be a tad late but FYI they're now half price direct from Vulpine. I just got a pair of the 'Opus' slim ones so will report back on fit.

  • Spoke's haven't survived occasional use over the last year, dreaded crotch hole has arrived. Probably averaged at least one wear a week but not great given cost.

  • Looser fitting riding jeans suggestions? Fed up with jegging vibes, Swrve 4 way stretch look ok but wandering if there's anything else out there.

  • Only 52 wears is pretty disappointing!

I turned some old jeans into riding shorts when they developed holes in the knees. Cutting the legs meant I had some extra fabric to make a patch to prevent the inevitable crotch hole. If you put a patch on before the original fabric thins, then you have a sacrificial wear patch that you can keep replacing. The patch I made was a rectangular strip and is hard to see when the shorts are being worn.

  • Who's got the latest on cycling jeans?
Any opinions or links to share ?

  • My Duer performance something or other have proved to be a lot more robust than my Spokes. It's just a shame they look like jeggings.

Might try SWRVE regular fit next.

  • I really like these - don't pay full price though. There are regular sales and I paid £45 for my last pair. They also have a slim fit Opus version.
