  • Yeah, problem is that due to a previous conveyancer's mistake, we thought the lease was longer than it was, so the offer was made and accepted based on the basis of longer lease. It's quite a long way down the conveyancing road now but no one seems suitably worried or has asked me to actually start the extension process.

  • As in a letter saying they would be willing to extend to a new owner? Was the freeholder a local authority?

  • Thankfully lens distortion.

  • Another backup for this perspective. At 89 years, the cost to the new leaseholder will not be significantly higher between 89 when you're selling it, and 87 when they can extend after the mandatory two years, as marriage value is not in play. I would tell them that they should do it formally after completion.

  • Am I the only one who think the layout of this place looks rubbish?

  • I find the almost-symmetry of that quite pleasing. But they can take the fake grass, the decor of the dining room, and the description "utterly statuesque" and be on their way with them.

  • Yes, literally saying the new owner could start the process immediately. We were at 80 years so more problematic.

It was a housing association (shared).

  • Our energy provider ceased trading last month. Ofgem have appointed EDF as our new provider but we need to have a look around as we're pretty sure that they won't provide us with the same deal that we were on.

Finding it hard to find information as to what our rights are in this situation, does anyone have any pointers?

  • That happened to me a few years ago. When the businesses go pop the contracts are sold to a diff supplier (usually EDF or British Gas). There's nothing you can do about it. You go on to their most like-for-like tariff which will undoubtedly be more dorrah.

We're on Octopus now and take their Super green energy plan which is 100% renewables. It costs a bit more but it makes me feel like an eco-warrior. Their user-interface and customer service is the best I've ever come across. Everything is so simple to use. Worth paying a bit for that.

  • was it green network energy? same happened to me. very odd to get the email "Welcome to EDF energy"... my interpretation of said email was that the tariff will be the same or less with EDF until September

  • Happened to me recently too. Moved from Tonik to Scottish Power. We got moved to their most ‘similar’ tarrif with the option to switch or move to another provider once change over had completed. No obligation whatsoever to stay with SP

  • You can switch out immediately but you might have to stick around if you want to get any balance you had with the now dead supplier back.

The only thing EDF are obliged to do is to let you switch out again. If you did have a balance with the previous you might need to stick around a while because EDF won't honour it without the previous having been liquidated and that will take time.

tl;dr never run a positive balance

  • Same.

SP were weirdly aggressive about it when I switched through, guy on the phone wouldn’t accept I’d already decided to leave and was too busy to listen to his sales pitch/regulator waffle. I made the point that if he could offer me a better rate, why wasn’t it available in the switching sites and that when they did that I’d be perfectly happy to switch back.

  • We had this when we moved to NW6. The house was with GB Energy, and oddly we couldn't switch as we were not registered on the National Grid. Anyway, they went bust and we ended up with the Co-Op, who then sold our account (and presumably all the others) to Octopus. Quite happy with that!

  • Presuming you are with Green Network Energy, this is what Martin Lewis said:

EDF has told us it is placing customers on one of six new tariffs – which one you’re moved to will depend on the rates you were paying with Green Network Energy.

We’re still chasing EDF for full details of these new tariffs, but it has said that it "guarantees all customers will see a price decrease versus your current tariff until 30 September 2021."

So price wise you'll be fine till at least September, but their 'low carbon' energy is from nuclear so you might want to switch if only for that reason.

Don't switch until EDF is all set up or you'll fuck this up. I'd give it a few months personally.

  • Moving back in today. A shade under four months all done.

Deffo the most stressful thing I've done, despite hardly working due to COVID. Feel like I need to sleep for a week!

  • Thanks for that, I'd looked on money saving expert and obviously the amount of time I'm spending with my kids at the moment has rotted my brain to the extent that my ability to read stuff has been compromised.

  • Yes exactly the same thing happened with us, no notification from anyone else which is a bit weird. Nearly dismissed the EDF email as some kind of shit phishing attempt.

  • Thanks to everyone else for the replies some handy info there.

  • haha yeah I had the exact same reaction. they should look into that; why did the email not come from green energy network? weird

  • Don't switch until EDF is all set up or you'll fuck this up. I'd give it a few months personally.

I was with Green Network Energy too, but am supposed to be moving in the next couple of weeks so will probably have to fuck it up!

  • I've always wanted an observatory

  • I don't understand. They surely don't mean the leanto at the back?

  • Diespeker may well be the death of me.
Diesker: We have, in 10mm tiles, white or blue Terrazzo, and too many others to put in an email so please call.
    Me: Le calls.
Diespeker: 15 mins of European themed faffing We also have black.

  • Moving supplier or house? I guess either has the potential to do that.

We're supposed to be moving house in c. six weeks, I'm hoping we'll have been switched to EDF by then or God knows what happens...
