  • this morning I had "It's nearly your birthday, do you want to plan something?"
Yes google, I do, but there is this fatal virus fucking up the population of the planet right now and I can't.

  • Or LinkedIn telling you to "Congratulate X on their N+1 years at Acme Inc."

The reason X has managed another year is that they died 5 years ago, and there seems to be no way to tell Linked In this.

  • Getting injured in stupid and totally avoidable ways.

Slipped on the stairs on Sunday, broke my toe. Looking after a 10 month old baby with a broken toe is fun.

  • Same. Photos around Christmas time of my Dad holding my daughter over a year ago realising they've missed most of her life.

  • Ski jumping. They only go far because they land on a curved slope.

  • Ah come on, it's insanely awesome. Who cares if they're cheating geometry?

  • how do you propose we remedy this?
virtual horizontal from the lip of the jump or just land to flat?
I'm backing you on this 100%.

  • What actual horizontal distance do they travel?

I ran up Bloudkova velikanka [edit: Now I think it was the biggest one, Letalnica bratov Gorišek] to the very top in the summer once. I was fitter then. csb etc.

  • Looking after a 10 month old baby with a broken toe

I think you might be doing it wrong - whether you broke the baby's toe or you are using the toe to look after the baby.

  • you are using the toe to look after the baby.

I said it was fun, I didn't say it was correct.

  • My preference would be for them to come down a slope, up a ramp and then land on flat ground.

We wouldnt allow jumping off a hill in the long jump or triple jump

  • But... But.... Surely the slopeyness of the landing has no bearing on how far (horizontally) they fly? Doesn't a descending slope just mean a softer landing?
Have to admit I don't much care for ski jumping myself, but that's mainly because it always seems to overrun on the telly, encroaching on biathlon coverage, which I like muchly

  • But... But.... Surely the slopeyness of the landing has no bearing on how far (horizontally) they fly?

Of course it does. They'll continue to move horizontally so the longer they are in the air the further they will go horizontally. With the ground falling away it allows them to spend longer in the air, therefore they travel further horizontally.

The take off ramp on a ski jump is usually at or below horizontal (rather than angled up) so apart from the little jump they do with their legs/body at the end of the ramp they cut through the horizontal plane from the end of the ramp almost straight away.

    Random google image:

P.S. Fuck that. I'll point myself down pretty much any slope on skis but I like to be able to do turns (if I can't get my edges in). The snow slope at the bottom looks fine though.

  • Until the winner of a ski jumping contest is whoever jumps furthest, ignoring 'style' it is bollocks anyway.

  • Cats and vasectomies do not play well together. The moment the pain killers stopped working my cat entered stage right to pirouette on my swollen nads.

  • Downhill water skiing, anyone?
Or with a surfboard perhaps? That would be something!

  • Indeed.

"Higher, faster, stronger" not "Neater, prettier, trickier."

  • Christ, even the fly-ey bit is ridiculously difficult. 60 points nominally but then more or fewer depending on whether you jump beyond-or don't get to, a given point. Why not just say "you flew 50 metres, you get 50 points. And you flew 100 metres, that's 100 points"?
Never really understand sports that make their scoring/rules so impenetrable to the casual observer. It's almost as if they want to put potential fans off. Shurely not?

  • I also have a cat so I'll bear that in mind.

  • I reckon the long jump would be much more exciting if it was performed from a roof.

  • The British media's obsession with the military, Britain's obsession with Britain's military history and Britain's jingoistic fanfare for anyone deemed this weeks British 'Hero'

  • Years ago I did the Olympic Park tourist thing in Calgary. Going down the real Cool Runnings bobsleigh run (or at least 2/3rds of it) was super fun.

However, standing at the top of the Eddie the Eagle Olympic ski jump hill gave me the proper heeby jeebies.

  • Huck to flat

Josh Bender would have been the GOAT
