  • Also please buy from a retailer that pays UK tax.....

This is a bit locking the stable door after the horse has bolted.

  • I get what you are saying, but USB 3 was out long before usb-c was created, so these cables are not 'old' they are redundant from the start. Manufactures will make what people buy.

So it's always best to buy the best that's fit for purpose. Society creates too much waste. High quality that can be used for longer surely better.

  • So they are openly rinsing us (I get the irony of saying this on an Apple Thread), so, what carry on letting them?

    Vote with your wallet.

  • Totally. One day we might get iphones with usb-c then it'll be fucking great.

  • USB 3 isn't free though - it needs five extra cores in each cable, which is completely wasted material if it's only ever used for power.

They also make it less flexible so less fit for its main purpose. Maybe more likely to break too.

  • People spending thousands of pounds on Apple stuff and then complaining about Amazon's tax arrangements for the purchase of a ten quid cable just seems a bit hypocritical.

  • One of the reasons I've invested more in Apple stuff over time is because the integration between different things was quite good, but with the move to the new HEIC picture format it's become annoying.

I used to be able to upload pics straight from the photo app to for e.g. Flickr, but now I have to export them all as Jpegs, upload them, then delete them back off the desktop, which is an arse.

Is there anyway to tell the photo/image app to use a format that everyone else does?

  • Change the file format to Most Compatible?

  • How are the two in anyway related?

    Not a fan of Amazon.

  • Change the file format to Most Compatible?

I have no idea how I would do that, I can't find it in the preferences for Photos

  • Settings/Camera/Formats

Though I’ve never had a problem uploading images to Flickr from my iPhone. Has the chance to HEIC happened recently?

  • Apple, like Amazon, are very big on aggressive tax avoidance.

If people are choosing where to shop based on the UK tax they pay then Apple probably isn't where they should be shopping.

  • I think every company optimises their tax bills.

It's my (very basic) understanding that Amazon is the worst offender by far (along with being a terrible place to work and making out harder for smaller business to survive)?

  • Much easier to pay less taxes when your a big buisness than the small ones, so dumb

  • If you're looking to buy an Apple product, Apple is involved. If you're looking to buy a decent USB cable there is no need to involve Amazon.

  • It is. From my reading though Apple is tax efficient but well within the rules and regulations whilst Amazon is closer to tax dodging than most others. I might very well be wrong though

  • Last year Apple were due to pay £6m in corporate tax (which they don't expect to pay).

Obviously Apple may just be doing really badly in the UK although it's probably more likely due to all of their IP being shifted over to Ireland to make use of the incredibly low tax rate that the Irish government gave them (which, after about 5 years of court cases, has been decided it's a legal thing to do).

Amazon is a significant offender (as are Netflix, Instagram, etc) but it's all, in theory, legal so it seems harsh to single out Amazon.

  • It’s pish they are all being allowed to legally get away with it but what can we do.

  • but what can we do

    Boycott them.

I try and avoid using Amazon wherever possible. I've never had Amazon Prime. I don't use Netflix. I never used Starbucks (except for their toilets). etc.

I'm far from squeaky clean though. I still buy the occasional thing through Amazon if I cant find it anywhere else. I've also paid more for something on eBay only for the vendor to just ship the item to me via their Amazon Prime account. I've got an iPhone and I'll be buying a M1 Mac Air in a couple of months as I'm going to have a go at doing some iPhone app development (so I'll also be giving 40% of that income direct to Apple).

  • ebay is the same as listed they pay fuck all tax too, its a vicious circle that I dont think enough people will ignore to make an impact on there pockets.

  • I think all the big internet based ecommerce companies probably pay as little tax as they can get away with in many of the jurisdictions they operate. So does it really matter now? It's happened, there's no way back. It's one of the reason's for the collapse of high street shopping and town centres. It'd difficult to compete if you've got to pay city centre rent and tax on top of that.

I always thought it was a huge fuck up by the legislators, who should have put the safeguards and a proper taxation structure in place when these companies were just starting. There have been various proposals throughout the years, but it's too late now, since the ecommerce companies are so big.

  • I agree, it’s far too late and the governments were far too lax and they have ran away with it plus it’s much easier to get wee guys than big guys for tax evasion.

  • I'm soon going to shift my MacBook Pro having been made jealous by my mrs getting herself one of the new M1 Pros.

What should i be asking for it? It's got the marks and scrapes of a 7yr old used MacBook - screen in good condition mind, the associated de-shielded charger cable and has had a replacement keyboard - which i severed the backlight ribbon fitting.... Doh.

    Battery says the below:
    Cycle Count: 1218
    Condition: Normal
But Normal can be described as approx. 1hr and don't risk it below 20%.

I don't know if i should be asking £250 or £400 and eBay is no help.

I should also look to shift the 27" iMac which is gathering dust under my desk too. Not forum friendly that one I'm afraid as i'm in the SW and CBA posting.

  • Just on Amazon, if you're not aware there is a smile.amazon.co.uk site which is Amazon, but a percentage of each sale on it goes to charity (you pick from a list).

There is no reason not to use it if you're shopping on Amazon.

  • Picking up my new M1 Macbook Pro from work this week and looking forward to seeing how it performs, it might well tempt me to shift my current 2012 i7 Mac Mini (last to be manually upgradable and already with dual drive) while it still holds decent value... Madness or the natural evolution of things?

I mostly use it for Lightroom and Logic Pro, both of which are already native M1 (though I dread to think how third party plugins might work on Big Sur/M!...) plus will probably be doing more video stuff for which I could forgo Adobe and go FCX or Resolve (both of which are M1)
