Am I meant to just make a payment entering in the total shown on my "View your calculation" even though it doesn't show as owed on my account.
Yes, remembering to deduct any payments made in advance the year before. It'll take a while before the latest return shows on your account.

After the panic of thinking you don't have enough to cover your tax bill, because you had forgotten about that deduction.
Every. Fucking. Year.
-
• #554
One year I not only panicked but paid the full amount. Ooops.

Cheers.
I drafted it ages ago, but forgot to submit it so only did that on 29th. I assumed by today it would be updated.
I'll just pay the £x I think I owe less the ~£1k today. Then see what happens and claim ignorance if it's wrong.
Thanks to covid I haven't had to cough up all those bullshit payments on account.

Yes. But you must pay it yourself and also have to have it to do your job. So membership of the British Medical Association is deductible if you are a doctor, but not as a, for example, Chimney Sweep.

Better to over pay then claim it back to be safe, I paid the July payment early by mistake one year and it got refunded without issue.

Thanks, I found some HMRC internal guidance that said it's fine if it's relevant (the example they gave was a teacher having two different memberships that were relevant to 1. subject and 2. teaching - but neither sounded exactly "required") so I have claimed it and given details of what it is in the info box. Let's see.

This, have a 4 digit balance I am going to leave till next year at least
-
• #563
Just tried to pay the outstanding balance on my latest tax return and couldn't do it. Phoned HMRC and spent a long time on hold getting a little bit more pissed off with every passing minute. When I got through I discovered that what I thought was a balance to pay was a rebate. FUCKING BONUS! I was no longer pissed off.

Filed with over 2 hours to spare until the deadline. I'm getting cautious with my old age. Still, should have a nice big refund due to me.

Got mine in at 1am this morning. 23 hours early! I felt like an admin god.

I paid mine ages ago, you lot are slackers
-
• #570
how long does it take for HMRC to deposit the rebate in your account?
-
• #571
Not that long IME, at least for self-assessment/payment on account refunds. I've got mine already, having requested it earlier in the month.

• #572
