Am I meant to just make a payment entering in the total shown on my "View your calculation" even though it doesn't show as owed on my account.

Yes, remembering to deduct any payments made in advance the year before. It'll take a while before the latest return shows on your account.

After the panic of thinking you don't have enough to cover your tax bill, because you had forgotten about that deduction.
