Having experimented with;
Both with large tyres and guards. On rough-road type terrain (not rocky singletrack) I think 650b is nicer. I guess I’m really after something that feels quite road-like.
Of course there’s subjectivity. I ride with quite a lot of weight over the front, am only one height(!), have a history riding track bikes etc. All this probably influences the geo and handling I prefer ... preferences will vary.
My actual off-road bike is quite different (a cross bike with 44mm, 700c wheels).
