  • Running SWA between a cabin and a garage. Small gap about 50cm. Is it ok to run the cable straight through a hole in either building (single skin timber cabin, ply and PVC fascia on the garage side).
I’ll silicone each penetration obviously, or should I really run them into junction boxes with glands etc.

  • I'm not sure there's a regulation that applies. It seems like the kind of thing that should be fine if it's all fixed in place. Junction boxes would look nice though :)

  • Given the steel protection running in the cable I'd be keen to earth those in case of a short from a damaged live conductor energising the whole length...

  • silicone

Is that 'silicone' as in 'Of course, I'll put something to weatherseal the penetrations'?,
    or,
    'I'll use silicone'?

Interior/sanitary/vinegar silicone does not have good unprimed adhesiononto timber or PVC.
Building/low modulus silicone also benefits from priming.

Could I suggest the Soudal Fix All (Toolstation 61251)
or Fix All High Tack, (Toolstation 84704)

If £6+ per tube is a bit much,
the solvented Gripfill (TS 79360 £2.28) will do an adequate job.
    Other suppliers are available,
    TS catalogue was to hand.

  • My SWA running between garage to log cabin and then on to other shed.
