  • What are people using to actually drink their coffee?

    I'm using one of these:

but they're not machine washable, and it was my office coffee cup, so feels a bit wrong at home.

What are my alternatives? I quite like the no-handle thing.

  • I got a nice Kinto mug for xmas, my girlfriend was shocked how a mug could cost £25.

  • A boggo, run of the mill white mug!

    Edit, actually, not strictly true.

Edit 2, actually not true at all.

Filter/Aeropress goes in a mug. Cappuccino-size drinks I have some large teacups that fit under the portafilter, same size and shape as the cappuccino cups in most coffee places. For smaller, flat white, I have a 1980s (?) Batchelors Cup-a-Soup cup which also fits under the portafilter. Perfect size and found it in a charity shop for 99p.

  • They are if you take the cork off.
You could replace with silicone which is happier in the dishwasher

  • My brother makes these: https://odyn.studio

I've got a few of them here in Italy, but he makes them in Cardiff. I also use a KeepCup when I'm heading out and about.

  • Think they recommend against taking the cork off as it'll end up breaking apart taking it off and putting it on. I had a glass one with a silicone sleeve which was fine. Though I'd recommend against KeepCups for filter (or americanos for that matter). Over time the seal goes and ends up leaking coffee as you drink. Their proposed solution to this was to wait until the coffee had cooled a bit before putting the lid on. Pretty disappointing in that regard. I bought a new lid and it had the same issues within a few weeks.

  • I really rate my Frank Green ceramic cup. No leaks and keeps the coffee warm for ages. Also the perfect size to fit in a bottle cage. My coffee was the perfect drinking temperature after cycling for about an hour in the cold a couple of weeks back.

  • They're lovely but all sold out :(

  • I've taken to sticking my filter in a kinto thermos and pouring into a mug.

  • I have a steel thermo keepcup if i am leaving the house with a coffee, otherwise its just the mugs we have.

I did look at a Ember² (well, mentioned to DethWife i wouldn't mind one, her response was "£130 for a fucking mug? you're the fucking mug")
Might get one for when I'm back in the office as I am notorious for forgetting my drinks.

  • Ah balls, sorry, I thought he might have produced some more. Perhaps with lockdown he's been unable to get to the studio.

  • Yeah got one last week for making wife’s coffee for her to take to work for exactly this reason. At 6am every second counts.

She’s adamant it produces a lot smoother brew than pour over with exact same beans and grind etc.

What are the recommended temperature controlled kettles?

  • My brother just got a EKG stagg and is really impressed with it. He got it on a recommendation from a friend who is a roaster here

  • EKG stagg

    Thank you!

    Will look into it

  • Where does nice coffee in 1kg bags that aren't massively expensive? I generally like south/central American stuff. I'm not an expert at all so that's about as far as I can go in describing what I like!

Edit: should have mentioned, whole bean, to be used with either a V60 or a coffee machine and either order online or to pick up in SE London.

  • Actually, whilst I'm here, can anyone recommend a travel cup that will fit in a standard car cup holder, keep coffee warm for a few hours (doesn't need to be all day) and is easy to open with one hand but won't leak if chucked in a bag? I've currently got a small thermos which is great but I can't safely use it whilst I'm driving (which I do for a living). I also pinch my girlfriend's Frank Green travel cup but it leaks like fuck if not held perfectly upright and isn't well insulated at all.

  • An extreme long shot, but I have some unopened coffee beans I'm not going to use before they probably go stale. It's these: https://www.hejcoffee.co.uk/product/cafe-queero/

If anyone wants them, I'd be up for swapping for either some decaf beans, or V60 filters.

Catford based but willing to travel a little bit.

  • I've got one of these, works great and DOES NOT LEAK!! Even when it's upside down in the bottom of a bag... Their stuff is nicely made...

    Unfortunately, mine isn't pink...

  • I've not had that problem so far with my Frank Green (not that I've had a coffee on the road in a year...), but as you say it doesn't really insulate.

  • Definitely, definitely check out James Gourmet.

  • That looks decent actually! Cheers.

@JB, any in particular you'd recommend?

  • Anyone else enjoying Hoffmanns ridiculous grinder week on youtube?
    Look at this space-age motherfucker:

  • Honestly, no, and I've not drunk any of their coffee myself.

James Hoffman has recommended them in the past. They were IIRC one of the first specialty roasters in the UK but they don't charge specialty prices.

My dad has ordered from them upon my recommendation and had some great results with the Simply Brazil espresso, which at 18.50GBP for 1kg seems like great value to me. But I feel like you're after filter... He hasn't tried their filter. But the Simply Brazil has now become his go-to espresso.
