  • On another note, am I the only who is slightly cynical about the fact that Mahomes has been cleared to play in tonight’s game? Wonder if it had been a regular season game if he would have sat out? Do players usually get back to the field this quickly?

Obviously it’ll be a better contest with Mahomes under center than the back up, but makes you wonder how independent the concussion protocol is currently.

Am I right in thinking that rugby has a two week protocol?

  • Honestly I was half expecting a contraversial return to the game last week if necessary. Obviously CTE has been a massive hotbed issue for the league, which is why the current 5 step protocol exists. In theory he's assessed by an 'independent' neurologist at every stage of return to participation. Obviously the league has enough history that I think it is absolutely right to be cynical about the balance between 'protect the shield' in liability terms, and 'protect the shield' in $$ terms. No doubt exacerbated by the fact that Mahomes will, I'm sure, be adamant that he is okay to play.

    Full details are here

In theory, I'm sure it is more than feasible that his cognitive activity has 'returned to baseline' after doing all of these things this week. With no apparent loss of consciousness he could very realistically be absolutely fine with a week off. Particularly as, as a quarterback none of his football activity in practice will involve taking any contact whatsoever.

I guess it becomes an even trickier case of risk management at the QB position, as frequency of contact is much lower than any other position, but impact on the game of removal more significant.
