Tyre recommendation for Triban RC500 Disc

  • Hey,

Have had some real difficulty getting the tyres on and off my girlfriend's Triban RC500; I've changed many tyres on many different wheel/tyre combos and never had the kind of trouble I've had with these rims. Seems like I'm not alone on the basis of a bit of research.

Getting the stock tyres on and off is fine, but they're worn now and and she needs to replace them; I've had a crack with some old new Continental GP5000s and they just won't go on, and while some very old, very well used GP4000s went on, it took a few stints to get them off - on the side of the road it would be an absolutely miserable experience. She's less experienced changing tyres and there's just no chance she'll be able to manage if she were to puncture.

I'm just wondering if anyone has had a similar issue, or could recommend tyres that have a particularly big circumference relative to the norm.

Apologies for what probably sounds like a stupid query - just hoping someone whose had a similar experience might be able to recommend a tyre that's particularly easy to fit.

  • I seem to remember @plasticniki having this issue.. I think the solution was to get rid of the wheels(?).

  • It isn't. Those wheels are on the 'bastard' end of the spectrum to remove/install tyres on.
I've done more than I care to remember and you have to brute force it; there isn't an elegant method of doing so.

  • Yep, though I have the RC520, I think they probably use the same wheels or very similar.

@R-Oshea after two absolutely awful rides where I got punctures on some 4 seasons and couldn't re-mount them, causing waiting over an hour in a layby in Biggin Hill until someone could help me, and in the second instance, getting the train home, I just got some different wheels. I tried everything, including replacing rim tape and using loads of different tyres but they were all incredibly difficult for me to get on and off. I also bought loads of "easy" tyre levers but none of them did the trick.

  • Reassuring to hear it’s not me.

They also seem to have configured the bike to make compatibility a real issue with wheels with disc but QR; I don’t suppose you know what wheels you replaced them with?

  • I bough some the 4 Season Hunts, you can get all their wheels with QR or thru axle and can get conversion kits if you want to convert them at a later stage. Never had a problem with them at all, still going strong!
