i've been running 48/15 for a few years now, all be it on relatively flat London roads mainly, (caveat-I can't really spin) but I'm moving back down to 46/16 or even 44/16 (as I have a spare 44 chainring), as 48/15 is really getting too much, and I'm convinced I'm slower overall as a result, even if my top end speed is more.
What ratios are folk running? When i was a wannabe 15 years agp or so , i ran huge gears even dabbling with 49/14 but after joining a road club with some old boy who fondly remembered their fixed days, I'm down to a near perfect 42/19.
Mixture of rolling countryside and hilly urban suits me fine
