3.7mm poplar ply with oak veneer on one side - two layers. Seems to have worked really well, they're all trimmed down to size and lacquered now. I even got fancy and put captive threaded inserts between the plys... hopefully they match the holes in the steel frames.
Think 2x 4mm birch ply would work fine too.

oooh - im thinking of something similar to make replacement back and seat for cesca frames, I need to model/draw it to see if it will look shit or not. what thicknii are you doin there 4mm ?
