As my cycling identity is more 'plodding tourist' than 'mighty suffering conqueror of cols', I'll admit to putting my name down as much with an eye to the roadside brew stop as to the alpine descent...

They work just as well for that or setting off early this time of year so you don't need a full extra layer.
