Not really.

It's swings and roundabouts. It's objectively superior if the hub, rim and spokes are all designed together as a complete system, but for mix-and-match hand builds the benefits may not be fully realised. We have been using J-bend spokes for over a century without any serious trouble, and spokes are much better than they used to be so what issues do arise from having a bend have all but vanished.

Even by the usual incompetent standards of Brexit mismanagement, that's going to be an absolute shit show. The fact that the EU insisted on the inclusion of such anti-business terms in the arrangement should disabuse even the most ardent Europhiles of any remaining delusion that the European project ever had anything to do with free trade.

Do you plan on riding in winter? My mack hubs aren't well sealed and frankly I think the machining is better on mass produced hubs I've had, even if the finish is not as pleasing.

Not here as well. The new rules are in response to outside eu sellers declaring low value and it sneeking in under the radar. Also above certain thresholds which varied from state to state eu business has to register with vat in a member state. Big eu firms had to resigster with all member states and submit vat returns. The new regime simpiflies everything.

Cross boarder commerce and the rise of online market places have forced a change in the rules.

I will go along with it. It not going to be too burdensome and the reward is huge. Eu sales are huge chunk of change for me. Please keep anti eu politics out of this thread at least.

It's more a broad anti-politics point than an anti EU one. The pattern repeats itself throughout the world and all through history:

1. Make a bad law
   
2. Discover that the cost of enforcing it is out of all proportion to the benefit
   
3. Punish the population by replacing it with a worse law

Not much at all. I was only looking at the Mack hub as it was a recommendation based on my criteria of wanting to match a Bitex front road hub.

As stated, all I want is a low flange fixed 24h hub. I’m struggle to see why that seems so hard to source.

Hand built wheels are a minority interest as far as the industry is concerned, fixed is a small niche, track riders using traditional wheels have largely favoured large flange, so that's what became popular in the early 21st century fixie boom.

I went Mack when looking for the same. There was a shop in Germany* that might be more willing than Mack himself to sort out the vat. Otherwise a place in Singapore was exporting them and in theory is already set up to deal with this stuff.

Raketa might be worth looking into. Similar price and weight to mack, sealed and has adjustable preload. Ships from Russia.

I’ve bought some rims that have (unexpectedly) turned up with single eyelets. Usually use hm nipple washers but is there any point now?
