Grey windows
I think having the actual windows in modern builds grey usually works. It's painting what is traditionally white, grey often looks a bit affected.
East London Victorian / Edwardian terraces seem to be the worst offenders of "zhuzhing-up" nice traditional features.
Obviously horses for courses and you can paint over it.
Too many victorian terrace houses have been ruined with black/dark grey paint. I really wish there were stricter rules with what you are allowed to d with the front of houses. PVC windows with those decretive gold bits and cut glass boil my blood.
A balcony is of course totally fine.
