squid bikes have such "industry disruption energy" in the fact they're "fun" "not serious" "utilitarian" but then cost a bazillion pounds for something that cost half its price a couple of years ago but now using the bad standards
it's all v yank

1800 dollary-doos for a bare alu frameset?
-
• #15756
Artisan innit.
Anyone have the entire story on Spooky?
My impression/ understanding is that they were one builder “Frank the welder” that was east coast industry disruption alu frames with a good reputation and small following that faded maybe more due to boredom as opposed to lack of sales.
Then the brand got bought to be revived / get blessing from previous creators /save on marketing and get the free good-will of being an underground frame maker and launch a gravel-bike. Seems off brand to following this fad that is gravel bikes... -

@Eeyorecore is probably the most qualified to talk about Spooky

And only a cool 250 more if you'd like them to cover it in rattle can spray paint.

“All road”rather than “gravel” but a new skool/old skool take.

They made bombproof MTB and jump frames back in the day, I had a Metalhead which was hands down, my favourite bike... they were a bit like David Carson’s design work, as in, everyone copied them, hence them making another frame called The Bandwagon... had a big following over here and had one or two Brit teams that used their frames for racing... not too sure what happened to them after that as I stopped riding MTB. I like what they’ve done with their new cross/gravel frame, but kinda looks like everything else, but with salmon pink paint

Cantis can get to fuck.
-
• #15762
No way man. Simply spend £250 on René Herse cantis (that have had all adjustability removed) and you'll see how truly acceptable they can be

Anybody got a wolftooth 42t SRAM direct mount chainring for sale? Mine is it's last legs and there's no stock anywhere, if not a SRAM 1x ring or another direct mount?

I'm glad someone is telling the truth in this sick, sad, upside down and back to front world.

That Rene Herse article is even more regressive than usual.
As we thought about how to optimize cantilever brakes, we realized that most cantis are – how to put it politely? – suboptimal in their design. Take the straddle cable: It’s made from the same thick wire as a brake cable, which makes too stiff to conform to the straddle cable yoke. (You can pre-bend it, but it’s never perfect.) When you brake, the first part of the lever travel only serves to tighten the cable, before can you apply braking force to the pads.
Shimano cantis have had a pivot at the straddle for approximately a quarter of a century.

I’m getting a Topstone from work, so will probably be flogging my Open WI.DE/GRX build soon. Size small. Any interest here before I do a proper sale thread. Will come with non carbon saddle & seatpost. £3.5k
Would be happy to split if there’s interest.

Loads of great stuff in that article, but in the end I must agree, if you're spending thousands of pounds on a custom constructeur frame and you don't care about braking, you should definitely go all the way and buy extremely expensive cantis that lack spring adjustment and cone washers.
https://www.renehersecycles.com/optimizing-the-cantilever-brake/ ze article in question.
