I don’t think you want to abrade with self adhesive. There’s no real liquid/gel property to the adhesive or cure to take advantage of the key and increased surface area as it’s tacking rather than bonding. You want it shiny really, so that it grabs. You might want to abrade it to reduce the surface finish to a smoother finish if anything, ie remove any high spots. Key thing is to not have any greasy residue or dusty debris.
Materials testing hat on: You do need to clean the surface before abrading else you’ll force any oily residue into the grooves where you abraded. Then it’s almost impossible to get out. Always clean multiple times with isopropanol before abrading, then again after until your cloth comes away clean. Alter the solvent to suit the material.
"Cleaning" by wiping with a solvent just spreads any oil contamination into a nice even layer. Better to abrade the surfaces with clean dry sandpaper/wire wool/Scotch-Brite
