That white thing hanging from the wall is the Nest HeatLink. It's going to be placed on top of the cabinets out of view, but also with a line of sight for the radio down the length of the house. Where it used to be didn't help it get through brick and stained glass, so this will help it be more reliable.
This is the one future quirk... some plumber in the future will wonder where the hell the control wiring for the boiler is, and the answer will be "on the cupboard behind you, duh!".
