  • Where online can I find pyjamas for a lad who’s 6’ 7”? Yes I’ve googled, but am looking for a recommendation, it’s for a gift :)

  • Don't really know how but I seem to have completely screwed my left crank arm. It looks like the inside splines have all rounded off and I can't get it to fit on properly. Is this just a case of having to replace the whole crank arm (4700)?

  • Either the metal pinch bolts or the plastic retainer screw came loose. It looks like a replacement to me. What’s the axle spline look like?

  • There's little good news here. I doubt that is rescuable.
Replacement bottom bracket & crankset would be the order of the day.

  • The inner third doesn't have splines from the factory. I'd expect the remaining splines to still engage once tightened.

How much of the axle comes through when fitted?

  • Does look like you've mashed it, from those pictures there's nothing saying you need to replace the crankset or BB, likely just the left arm, if you can't do that you may get away with filing down the mashed bits carefully and getting that arm back on, but that's a bodge rather than a fix.

  • Always happy to be corrected.

  • They might be knackered too, bit there's nothing to say that in those photos.

  • Thanks guys. I managed to rubber mallet mallet it back on in the end and after 5 miles it feels fine.

Splines on the axle are fine from what I can tell. Am assuming the metal they use for the axle is stronger than the arms.

Have got a replacement just to be sure and as there's good chance it might get worse. £30 for whole new chainset minus big ring was too good not too.

    Thanks again!

Steel axle and alu arms, so yeah.

  • i've been thinking way too much about this drawing.

can someone who knows more about engineering/machining tell me why it specs a pretty loose tolerance (+/- .005") but a fairly high surface finish? the former will be because it's for a non-precise application:

but why the latter? according to some googling, a surface finish of 16 is a medium-ground finish. is this for corrosion resistance?

  • is this for corrosion resistance?

Probably. I doubt that the parts will be ground - turned from bar stock with flats milled on the sides, maybe? The surface finish requirement is probably to make sure they get hand sanded after machining so they look nice.

I reckon +/- 0.05” (0.13mm) on the length is probably about right for parting off on a manual lathe with no second-op machining.

  • yeah I couldn't see them being surface ground. Seemed very unlikely. maybe that's why serottas are so expensive!

  • Yep, i need the 1.37x24 the one i have wont go in

  • An English thread BSA BBR-60 would be fine.

  • I need to stick some alarm bits to doors, windows, walls, etc Any recommendations for double sided tape or similar that will actually stay stuck?

  • Indoor or outdoor application? Indoors I've had decent results with 3M Command Strips.

  • Surface preparation is everything. After that, I've had decent results with Sanoj https://www.amazon.co.uk/stores/page/9641FD57-211E-432A-B5AE-86BEB8EB7064 and of course 3M VHB tapes are always a safe bet.

  • Is google fucked? Has the SEO changed or something? I swear I can never find anything these days, instead I get a load of general and unspecific results.

Eg, in previous years I've always found answers to my tax questions, but now I just get pages and pages of gov.uk results that are of no help. The results are in the right area, but they're never specific enough to help. Am I just losing my marbles?

  • Is google fucked?

No, tax is fucked. Treasury law-making has been captured by a narrow interest, mostly by corruption of legislators, resulting in a tax code which mere tax-payers cannot understand.

  • Google is also fucked. They ‘improved’ the algorithm and it operates differently to how it did a few years ago.

  • New GP5000 tyre exploded within first 50km. One of the brake shoes became angled up and rubbed away at the tyre until it blew out at this point. I see several shredded threads. Can anything be done? If not, what other use is there for a new buggered tyre like this?
