Whisky do a version of this too, as do Trek (I think).
Star nut in the steerer: (obviously don't do it if the steerer is carbon!!)
Instead of tapping it could you use a small bolt to pass through the hole? Bolt head facing into the centre of the fork? Is the steerer aluminium? In any case you could use a carbon expander bung (for carbon forks) to save having to modify the star nut? I assume you don’t want the mounts to be fixed via the quick release skewer/wheel axle?
