  • Hiya,

Here’s my little roller up in Orkney. Looking to rebuild the wheels with some sealed track hubs due to the salt up here. I had hoped for old phils or something but looking at new sturmey archer or halo, anyone used the sturmeys before?? Seem cheap from a pretty reputable brand but just want to hear some real world experience, cheers!

  • Sturmey Archer are a Taiwanese brand now.

I don’t think there’s much to separate Novatech, Halo, ... all the rebranded Novatech hubs. They’re all sealed cartridge bearings. I think the bearing covers are pretty similar?

I’d buy whichever allows budget for cone spanners (if needed) and lots of thick grease. Drop in SKF bearings once the og ones are gritty and load everything up with grease (if grease works its way out, water and dirt can’t go in). It’s not too arduous changing bearings, gets easier each time and doesn’t require special tools.

  • That’s some spot on advice there, thank you mate! All stocked up on grease and tools and it’s nice to know the sks bearings will fit when it comes to changing. Cheers!
