  • It may be a bit cliche, but zwift can be whatever you want it to be. You can race (and they are hard), you can do training plans (ftp, distance etc), social rides (the events calendar is full of meet-ups), you can ride in a group with a pace rider (various speeds depending on what you want) or you can ride on your lonesome.
With only a few exceptions if you are on a road bike with a smart trainer then all the only difference between all the routes is the image on the screen. Some trainers (Tacx Neo for example) provide some real road feedback which I assume means if you’re going over a virtual wooden bridge the trainer does something to replicated that. For most of us it just adds a little resistance.

  • Are people generally having more success connecting Zwift via Bluetooth or Ant + ?

Ant+ works perfectly with Rouvy, TrainerRoad and Bkool, but drops out often enough with Zwift that I've stopped using it for now, as it's quite frustrating having to stop and start all the time

  • Never had an issue with ant+

  • I've been using an extension lead ( which I've tested ) running right up to the smart trainer, so signal strength shouldn't be an issue. Also keeping the fan and digital radio out of the way ( if that really makes a difference ). Weird that Zwift is the only app to keep dropping out

  • I assume means if you’re going over a virtual wooden bridge the trainer does something to replicated that.

It does indeed. And with cobbles.

  • Thanks.

I am however having no luck convincing my partner that a trainer set up in our dining room (which is the only room really with space) is an acceptable idea.

Even though she has a whole room just for her books.

  • Further to @jaitch 's comments, are there any suggestions of a good Smart trainer on a budget?

  • Consensus is usually Tacx Flow, about £250. I think it's the cheapest smart trainer.

Don't forget to budget for a fan though. And possibly bits like an ANT+ adaptor depending on your setup.

  • Cheers. Some Tacx Flow Smart trainers on eBay going for more than they are new... nuts. Everyone seems to have sold out.

  • In stock at Wiggle?

  • ^ Not yet. Should be soon so I think I'm 90% sure I'll buy one the they come back into stock.
If I'm using my MacBook Air (2020) then what is the best way to connect the trainer? Just bluetooth?
Other than a fan, am I missing out any other kit? I'll set up in our lean-to/garage type building.
Does it matter loads if the floor isn't quite level?

  • I’ve just been lent an old Tacx iflow (1901) - I’ll start googling but anyone got this model and running it with Zwift? I am also totally new it and riding indoors but thought I’d give it a go...
    Cheers in advance,
    Matt

  • I use :
Ble to connect to a Mac or mini iPad.
    No fan
    Outdoors
My floor is not level, I feel like I'm going up hill

    I have not died yet.

  • If you're using a bike you car about you'll want a towel to protect your headset / toptube from your sweat.
I find using the Zwift companion app on your phone is the easiest way to control things in game rather than trying to use a mouse on your computer.

  • Turn the bike around. You'll go much faster.

  • After my third free trial expired I finally resigned myself to the fact that no matter how much I dislike zwift, it's still better than the other options.

Am now slightly fucked off that even though I'm giving them money, I seem to be missing something significant. Anyone know why Innsbruck would appear twice and there's no Watopia? Uninstall/reinstall hasn't had any effect.

  • I've also just started paying after denying the appeal for years. This winter is the first time I've actually enjoyed the turbo and the change has been because of group rides and races on zwift. I still dislike intervals but I'm finding it easier to motivate myself to train to not get dropped quite as quickly in my weekly race.
Weather and lockdown have added to it, I'm sure, but evening rides on zwift and longer weekend off-road unstructured rides are is definitely a good mix for me at the moment.

  • Wait. Can you fixie on zwift?

  • Forgive me for not making the forum aware of all the bikes I own.

  • I know someone who only rides his track bike (it's a sort of fixie apparently) on rollers on zwift.

  • ^^^^^ Fixed by deleting prefs.xml

  • Anyone know why Innsbruck would appear twice and there's no Watopia?

I’ve only used Zwift once. Hated it, but I seem to remember it saying that there’s only 2 courses available daily and they rotate on a daily basis.

    Hmm, maybe not then!

  • Two 'guest' worlds based (sometimes loosely) on real locations, plus the default fictional Watopia.

  • Stupid fucking Zwift has been broken for weeks if you are Saris/iOS/Bluetooth. Well annoying.
